Card payment giants Visa and Mastercard announced Saturday they will suspend operations in Russia, the latest major US firms to join the business freeze-out of Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

"Noting the unprecedented nature of the current conflict and the uncertain economic environment," Mastercard said it had "decided to suspend our network services in Russia."

Visa, for its part, said that "effective immediately" it would "work with its clients and partners within Russia to cease all Visa transactions over the coming days."

Major corporations across a range of industries have halted business in Russia since its invasion began 10 days ago, including everything from US-based tech firms such as Intel and Airbnb to French luxury giants LVMH, Hermes and Chanel.

Visa and Mastercard had already announced that they were complying with US and international sanctions imposed on Russia in the wake of its attack.

The noose on Putin is tightening. At some point the Russian people need to stand against Putin and take back their country.

I know, right? Funny how our forum Reichwingers are SO EAGER for us to get into a war with Russia -- but I betcha not a single one of them will volunteer to gather up their bang-bang sticks and go help Ukraine's defenders. C'mon, you paper tigers and chickenshits! What are you waiting for?! Are you saving your ammo for Americans?

Ukraine appeals for foreign volunteers to join fight against Russia
Most are sucking Putin's cock and don't want a war with Russia. They just like taking cheapshots at Democrats and are as hypocritical as Pedo Don himself.

They showed some fat moron on the news last night who claims to be heading over there to fight. The reporter asked him what if he gets injured/wounded, what then? He just shrugged, said he had no family, wife, kids so why not?

Just what the defenders need -- some non-trained idiot who thinks he's Rambo and has no idea about warfare, following orders, military discipline, etc. Sheesh.

He can unload Javelins and Stingers from Poland. :)

And dig latrine ditches, peel potatoes and beets and turnips, and guard the refugee camps.

Exactly.

During Vietnam, it took about 10 support personnel to put one soldier in the jungle. That's been shaved a bit, mostly by contracting some things to contractors like Haliburton.

In a situation like Ukraine where people are defending their homes, that ratio likely drops closer to 2-3 support per soldier. The fat boy wannabe can support in the rear-with-the-gear like Stone likes to do or he can be moved forward as an ammo carrier....a human mule.

Anyone with actual combat/warfare experience no doubt wants to stay as far away from that as they can. A few weekends playing paintball is not "combat experience."

Sanctions are subtle but very effective.

The Russian people will be motivated to do something as the pressure is ratcheted up.

They can't charge anything and their money buys less and less. Imported things are going to become very scarce and quite unaffordable.

Sooner or later the people are going to have to do something.

In general, yes. No one wants to risk death for no reason...which is what's happening to the Russian army at the moment.

That said, young men have often leaped into the fray. Ernest Hemingway was rejected by the US Army in WWI so he became an ambulance driver for the Red Cross and was wounded in combat. He covered the Spanish Civil war as a journalist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hemingway

Lots of young men want to test their mettle and war is a great way to do it.

Too bad they just can't figure out a better way to do that.
