WB: Thoughts on SMU over 'Bama?

All kids that play sports for college should receive the exact same stipend. Getting a free education and $$2,000 a month should be enough. Don't like it? Then go dig ditches for a living.
That time has passed. If school's hadn't fought increasing stipends and otherwise smaller ways to potentially monetize their opportunities then maybe we wouldn't be here. But now the flood gates are open and it is a freaking free for all. The game we grew up with is gone.

And now we're seeing state legislatures attempt to step in and either regulate (or make it more advantageous for teams in their state) regarding N.I.L. and so forth.

I think SMU should get in. Yeah, their schedule isn't as tough as Bama's, but they didn't have the losses we did.
The world done change huh? Throughout our (horrible) season you would hear some people say "well at least some young guys are getting playing time and we'll be ready to go next year".

But that's basically an antiquated old school viewpoint in today's world. With the kids transferring the way they are you can't just assume that your players will stick around. It's not total roster turnover each year but there's a good amount of it.

SMU has a lot of money to pay players with.

Meh rules can change. If they continue to pay players whatever the market demands college sports are doomed.

About 30 years ago Greg Ostertag a 7' tall high school stand out basketball star lived next do to the woman who provided childcare for my son. He propelled his his high school team to a couple of state championships. He was from a lower middle class family. The day after he signed with Utah(?) there was a shiny new yellow Jeep Cherokee for him and a Chevy conversion van for his father in his driveway.

My feelings are the OP is an idiot and this belongs in Sports not current events

I found his "justification" uncharacteristically specious, personally, and said so.

While not technically electoral politics, this involves politics because college football is American culture and with all the politicking regarding both the gov'ts role in N.I.L. and the regulation of the NCAA (and the politicking of the coaches over who should be in or out).

Damocles apparently feels otherwise.

Things have def changed since Grind was enforcing standards.

Remember, though, Rule 17 states that any issues with the Moderation of the board must be taken up in PM with the jpp.com staff.

I suppose we could start daily threads discussing women's softball tournaments and the like, and that'd be equally acceptable in this Political forum for Current News Events.

:dunno:

Under the table payments have been going on for a long time in college athletics. Now they've made it legal. (Back in the day a number of alumni would give kids 'summer jobs' that they never had to show up for but that they did get paid for. And one of the car tricks they would use, tell the kid to turn in his car to a local shop for "repairs" and the kid would get a loaner to use in the "meantime". Of course the loaner would be something new and fancy.)

As for those melting down about this thread here's something for you.

House lawmakers weigh bipartisan proposal to establish national NIL rules

During a Thursday hearing, NCAA President Charlie Baker advocated for more protections for college athletes entering name, image and likeness deals.

Seems “copy and paste” is lost and annoyed by a thread that actually exchanges opinions rather than personal insults and memes, not surprising

Does it?

3B. Threads are to remain consistent with the forum they are posted in (E.G. Current events go in Current Events, and so on).

BTW, Anchovies, is calling me "copy and paste" a compliment?

Manning and Ewers entering transfer portal.
I’d think that’d be a blow to Texas’ morale.
If Texas ever wants to really compete for a Natty they need better than both of those kids so in that regard it may be a blessing in disguise.
Clemson won’t compete, one and out, deposit bet, they also didn’t play the tougher teams in their own league
Swinney knows how to win big games. And Texas is vulnerable.

Your feelings are right along with "get off my lawn"!

Not clicking your mouse once you know what a thread is about has always been an option.

100% the genie should have been appeased before it escaped the bottle.

College sports and football in particular are a beautiful thing run by ugly people.

In the past, he doesn’t have the personnel he had before, the transfer portal and NIL has evened the playing field and Dabo, who still thought he could maintain his program the old way, was late to understand the significance

Weak ACC and Clemson didn’t win the league, in fact, if we’re not for a Syracuse team I believe, Miami would be in the game
