i opted for a word you might understand.
he (the grandfather who lived behind my house) was born and raised in the same slum. climbed out the window in 4th grade and never went back. he worked odd jobs, struggled with alcohol, found Jesus, worked hard and bought a property and wound up with dozens of them.
yes he was unusual but very real.
but it was government regulations that killed low income hosing. my friend was being groomed to take over the business but it was becoming impossible to make money a*t it. then the family w/ay of life died in the black community.
he tried renovating as this was Church Hill (as in St Johns church where P.Henry gave his speech) but that took greater handyman skills so he left for DC and became an undersecretary of something or other. he had always been interested in politics.
interesting times but mostly sad seeing black communities die.
