50 Americans were killed in Federally designated hate crimes in 2018 all of them were killed by right winger. Literally all domestic terrorist are right wingers. All you have to do is look at the reason people had hate crimes against them. . just about all hate crimes are from the haters on the right. Here's the list sex, color, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender identification, race. Religion,disability's . Not one thing that a democrat has any opposition to and what literally all hate party members have opposition to. But then the right hate everything.

If I had the time or the inclination, I could easily cite hundreds of racial discrimination lawsuits just in the past 20 years or so. Laws against discrimination are the best weapon against racism that the SYSTEM can bring to bear. Even if there was such a thing as "systemic racism", what would you propose to eliminate it? To say something is systemic means it goes to the core, and that it can't be removed. That can only mean that the morons who came up with this believe the only thing that can be done is to tear the whole system out by it's roots, and replace it with...something else.

Is it still illegal if it is not about race but about gender, sexual orientation, nationality, or other factors that make it a hate crime?

I'm still not sure about your point. Are you saying it is discrimination to enhance the sentences for some victims but not others?

It is about race. Other categories include as you mentioned. If race wasn't included in hate crimes, then I'd agree it's not illegal.

It is not "illegal" since there is no law about discrimination based on race with crime victims, but I agree it is not necessarily good policy. First, it is hard to prove because rather than just proving you committed the crime you have to prove the motive. Second, if a longer sentence deters the crime then make it apply to everyone to deter the crime for them, also.

I think it is to make the victims of those crimes feel like government is doing something useful.

I also have no desire to be one. OTOH, when race is included in sentencing laws, then I believe it's silly to say race isn't in our laws.

Did the white person attack the black person because of his race? If so, it is a hate crime if that state has hate crime laws. If not, it is not a hate crime. Hard to prove.

San Francisco reported a 567% increase in hate crimes against Asians.
