What Song Are You Listening To, Right Now?

I think of all the Americana music that has never been written down and is only in the fingers of someone who it has been passed onto.
So much has been and will be lost, even though there's been a push to collect as much as possible.

I have a songwriter/promoter friend in Nashville who has quite a collection. He's had some of his own stuff recorded by Gordon Lightfoot. It's a special genre that does not get the attention from the mainstream it deserves.

I remember laying in my bed, late at night, as a 9 or 10 year old and listening to those songs on an old tube radio.

The Appalachian music was the best.

You are so correct.

So many of those songs were a way to pass on tales of the past.
They were a living history.

I am going to send you a link in PM <snicker> It's of a young friend of mine- she plays a sweet mandolin- not really Americana, but she definitely has her own unique sound. She has quite the following in Seattle and Tacoma.

Roger Webster - En Aranjuez con tu Amor 'Orange Juice'

Here is the scene from Brassed Off, for comparison. I live in Yorkshire not far from where the miner's strikes happened in the '80s. I have had the privllege to hear the Grimethorpe Brass Band on several occasions.

The Miles Davis version from 1959 is still awe inspiring.

This has brought back beautiful memories dancing in Montreal clubs, many years ago. What brings it to my attention tonight is this is the first time I’ve heard it in English. As it was playing on TV, in French, I asked my wife if there was an English version. She Googled it and then proceeded to tell me the singer is a customer of hers. Who would have thought??

Following is the original version.

A note of interest: My wife also said Mr. Norman told her that when he went into the hospital for an operation the staff played that song as they were putting him under the anesthetic.

(Those damn impersonal, one size fits all, government run, Socialist hospitals!.....I just had to pass this along.) :D

It's fascinating that the English title #Only Love Sets You Free# is different to the French version which is #When You Are in Love#. Nice song nonetheless albeit a bit cheesy. I am just wondering if you were banged up in some rotting hellhole in the third world, surrounded by horny inmates, if that would help to get you out? :)

 I'm not sure of the hell hole scenario but I do know when the song played in clubs it resulted in some memorable hugs, conversation and, ultimately, a passenger for the trip home. :)

To paraphrase a popular song: Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end....
