I remember this from watching the Grammy's in 1998. One of the most remarkable vocal performances I have ever witnessed. Anyone with any musical training can understand just how difficult it is to sing classical music. The practice, preparation and skill required are just phenomenal. So in this performance Luciano Pavarotti, one of the greatest tenors of all time canceled a performance at the Grammy awards due to strained vocal cords. The producers, with literally 20 minutes to go, pulled Aretha Franklin out of the audience and asked her to perform Nessun Dorma which she had only preformed herself once several days before. On this short notice Ms. Franklin performed Nessun Dorma, in not the most technically correct manner, but in a stunning performance that only a true master could do. The fact that she only had 20 minutes to prepare and she delivered a performance like this floored me.
