what was the best time in American history?

I see that even the most sane among you are still stuck in the media's double talk over the issue. The real answer is: He should have immediately sprung to his feet and walked out at a fast pace. Never mind the fucking 'excusing' himself. It's obvious that the stupid fuck was thinking more about how the pet goat story would end than being your president.

Why is it that you people need a Canadian to separate out the bullshit for you?

Springing to his feet and dashing out would be impulsive. It would look like all bush cared about was saving his bacon, kind of like Capt. Schettino on the Costa Concordia. Impulsive and gobsmacked are both bad. A polite excuse was the way to go.

What I would love to hear is his ultimate explanation for that framed as a debate question prior to the election, and see how the American people would respond..

"You're in a classroom on a perfunctory Presidential visit to a school, and one of your aides whispers in your ear that America is under attack. What is your 1st concern, and how do you respond?"

"Well, my 1st concern would be for the kids in the classroom. I wouldn't want them to panic, so I'd stay seated and keep an 'air of calm' about me until we were finished reading the story."

the answer kills the republican party

Hillary Clinton last night, in response to Donald Trump, said America has always been great. Is she right Desh? Was America great when blacks were in slavery? Was America great when the Democrats terrorized blacks for a century following?

Really cawacko, only Democrats terrorized blacks?

In reality it was all of America but in Desh speak yes it was largely the Democrats. Look at what happened during reconstruction, blacks were actually able to run for office, and many won, as Republicans. Those voting rights were quickly taken away by the Democrats however. Then you had the KKK which was associated with the Democratic Party.

So Desh asks when was the U.S. functioning like we should be functioning and claims the answer kills the Republican Party. Hillary said last night America has always been great. So which is it?

When I think of terrorizing blacks, politicians aren't the first people to come to mind because racism transcends time, gender, religion, and economics. But every party has to answer for the attitudes toward blacks. Racism couldn't continue if only Democrats were racists.

People define American greatness in different ways. I've listened to Trump and disagree with his slogan "Make America Great Again", which seems to rely on keeping out immigrants and bullying people/countries that don't agree with him. Some think military might is what makes us great, others say economic strength. It's a pretty open-ended question.

I know you read Desh's posts because I've seen you 'like' or 'thank' them before. Look at her post that I responded to. You are choosing to ignore that. My answer comes within the context of her post.

(Since tone is hard to tell I'm not yelling or angry as I type this just to be clear) This is a free board and you can respond, or not respond, to whomever you would like. That's a good thing for all of us. If you want to give your answer above to Desh I will DEFINITELY thank your post. :)

There are no individuals in Desh's world. You are either a Democrat or a Republican and that's what your identity is tied to. And since we are talking politics here it was the Democrats who kept blacks from voting for a century and took away many of their civil rights.

Back to Desh's comment. Hillary said last night America has always been great. We've had ebbs and flows of course but I agree with her. However you ask many black folks and they'll say no America has not always been great. So since you are on board with Hillary but also ostensibly black voters who would you agree with?

I'll go back and read the entire thread and then respond to this.

I didn't re-read the thread. I went to post 844 and know exactly what Desh was talking about.

Yeah, trying to read through all this is a drag. I looked at 844 and suppose Desh is saying that the country has been worse under republicans. I thought (politically) the 80s were bad, the 90s were good and the 2000s bad. And I know that's a partisan answer but for me reagan and bush were the two worst presidents.

I'm not really with it tonight so probably shouldn't even have answered the post. Maybe tomorrow.

No worries. And there's no way I'm reading through this thread. Haha.

As an aside, my friend pitches tomorrow for the Pirates for I think the first time this spring. I've had to start following the team's beat writer for the Pittsburgh Gazette on Twitter to keep up on all the info!

dear idiot it wasn't the war that made those good times.

it was the post war boom.

what was the top tax rate back then?

How many people were clamoring for tax cuts?

How would a post war boom happen without a war to begin with.....idiot.

and the top tax rate was then as it is now, irrelevant....the marginal tax rate is the effective rate we pay....
a little history.....

The top rate for the federal Individual Income Tax was 91 percent in 1963. In 1965 Congress lowered the top rate to 70 percent, in memory of JFK who had floated the idea. Then Ronaldus Magnus charmed Congress into lowering the top rate to 50 percent in 1982. Reagan again scored in 1988, when the top rate went to 28 percent.
Through the good graces of two or our more popular presidents, the top rate on personal income taxes fell by 63 percent in 23 years (source).
But the top rate soon began creeping up. In 1991 Bush the elder broke his "read my lips" pledge and the top rate went to 31 percent, and in 1993 under Clinton the rate went to 39.6 percent, retroactively as it were. Then along came W., who ratcheted the top rate back down to 35 percent in 2003, where it has since remained.

Pre-WWII versus Post-WWII
http://www.freeby50.com/2010/08/effective-tax-rates-1934-to-2009.html
As you can see, before World War II the effective personal income tax rate wasn't very high at all. From 1934 to 1941 the effective personal tax rate was under 2%. However during WWII taxes increased to the point that the effective personal income tax rate hit 11.9% by 1944. From 1945 onward the tax rate fluctuated up and down over time mostly sticking in the 9-11% range. Only 12 times in 64 years from 1945 to 2009 did the tax rate exceed 11% or drop below 9%.

That's nice! Best of luck to him!

Tell us the years in which the US was functioning the closest to what you think we should be functioning.

Whats your favorite time period when we were getting it right?
