Actually Germany and Japan flooded the market with cheap goods before WWII (just as China does today) but yes, they were not competition for well made american products.
We never got lazy and greedy. Google it if you don't believe me, americans are and were the most productive workers in the world, even more so today, though much more poorly compensated.

Germany did build competitive and even slightly better products than the US for a while...even they do not do so any longer. German manufacturing is now mostly outsourced to former eastern block nations.
Japan however, never came close to matching the quality of amreican made goods, they just achieved that perception, nothing more.

actually, the Reagan administration would have sent us into a golden era if only we hadn't had Tip O'Neal and his Dumbocratic colleagues.......as it was it lasted through most of the Clinton administration.....
