it can be either from how a person is raised and/or experience with the opposite sex. in my case it was both. i am a polymath genius. i was dumped on by my adoptive father for being to bright (also, by my brothers (older twins)) and when i tried to hide it i got dumped on by my mother for not getting better grades. oh yes, the other kids did not like how i talked or caught on to things to quickly. even as an adult, i got shunned for it. even my bosses got weird about it even though they liked how quickly a finished projects. while some women liked me for it, others avoided me. also, i was too empathetic or caring (it frightened some of them). now i have a wife who loves me and cares about me for who i am, she too is a polymath genius. while i am dumping, my adoptive father molested my brothers and me.

oh well, i survived what was done to me and am getting healthier. sorry for going on so.

Yeah, my friend was from a Jewish family; her brother was supposed to achieve, she was supposed to marry. She was as smart as him, but never got credit for it. When she became valedictorian her mom said the competition must not have been as great that year. (She tied with two other women who were NOT happy with the mother's remark... I should know, I was one of them.) I would watch her as guys showed her how to work a math problem that I KNEW she totally knew how to do. She did get more dates than I did, have to say....

Your experience sounds more extreme than hers but yeah, in families that don't value brains, the smart one can be picked on. But in the long run, better to be bright than stupid - at least you have the ability to figure out what you want from life and how to get it!

College is obviously not for everyone and its usually apparent. Many on both sides discuss there expertise and we consult each other on issues often across party lines.
Many partisan hacks are afraid of that and everything else.

It's really sad when family doesn't respect kids for who they are. I can see that your adoptive father was totally insecure about having such bright step kids. It's easier to understand when a peer group does it (even though they're wrong) but family's the place you're supposed to feel safe and accepted.

I'm glad you found your perfect match and hope for the best for you all. If the molester got punished that's icing on the cake.
