I didn’t say a single, solitary word about political parties, bro'. The post is about liberalism; about ideology, not about transient political parties. I’d say, on balance, the Lincoln republicans and the Teddy Roosevelt republicans were more socially liberal than the Bourbon democrats or the southern Dixiecrats. But, the modern GOP is party of Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin now, so you can stop time-traveling through ancient history and clinging to the ghosts of the progressive republicans of 100 years ago. Teddy Roosevelt is considered a socialist by modern movement conservatism. He is widely reviled by today’s reich wing. And modern Republicans are overwhelmingly anti-reproductive choice, and anti-equal pay for women. Sh*t man, social conservatives and male neanderthals have a history of even trying to keep contraceptives out of the hands of women.

Just read Dixie’s posts, or the posts of any other republican NeoConfederate to get a flavor of how despised Linclon is among modern movement conservatism, and how “glorious” they view the noble southern struggle against the war of northern aggression.

dude.....Sarah Palin's more liberal than any of the liberals we had a hundred years ago.....the liberals of today run PETA and Greenpeace, Code Pink and the Democratic Underground......shucks, Franklin Roosevelt would simply have hung you and called it a day......

Even looked at in his own timeline, Lincoln is always looked at as a staunch conservative. He'd hoped he could spend his presidency concentrating on market reforms, promoting the growth of industry, and whatnot, but got stuck fighting for the Union. When you examine his domestic agenda, it was hugely conservative. He also was advocating for the containment of slavery, knowing that the radicals had no real plan for abolishing it, seeing as how it wasn't possible politically.

Teddy, on the other hand, was a leftist. As president, he did a very effecting job governing the country. But as a radical ideologue, he has my undying hatred for his incessant warmongering (such as supporting WWI from the get-go), and also for his cult-personality status which he used to accidentally get Wilson elected. Like Jefferson a century earlier, who had a solid first term and thus an admirable presidency, his personality and ideals stretched far outside the office and did untold damage to America. As far as progressivism is concerned, people always seem to overlook the fact that Taft, the so-called conservative, was the most progressive of the three presidents, and in just one term. Teddy was more interested in being loved and in waging war, and Wilson managed to kill progressivism through his tyranny as America's most powerful wartime leader.

When Teddy returned from Africa he created the Bull Moose Party because he despised Taft's Conservatism. Even Teddy knew that Teddy wasn't conservative.
 
I sleep diagonally on my bed once a year. Sort of my tribute to the man. :)
