Voting 3rd party is not a vote for Republicans unless the number of 3rd party votes would change that state's vote total to give the plurality of votes to the Republican. Even then we cannot be sure because we don't know how many of those 3rd party votes would have gone to the Democratic or Republican.

I laugh when people make comments like that. Take me for instance. I’ve voted third party twice in presidential elections. If I wanted to vote for the Republican I would have done so. But I get democrats telling me my vote supported the Republican and Republicans saying my vote supported the democrats. Ok.

In a state like CA that is safe for Democrats a 3rd party vote is not going to affect the outcome.
In many states the percentage of votes a party gets determines whether its nominee automatically qualifies for the ballot in the next election; so, voting 3rd party serves a purpose.

I had more than a few people tell me it was a cop out voting for Gary Johnson. You know what I say? “F you”. Don’t sit here and complain about the quality of candidates we get yet continue to vote for them anyway. The system is obviously stacked against third party candidates unless they can self fund (and even then it’s not easy) but people can create a movement if they want.
Another reason to vote 3rd party is that the Democrats and Republicans have sometimes adopted some of the program(s) of 3rd parties if that party is attracting a lot of votes in order to attract some of their voters. Usually a longshot but always a possibility.
