In America, unionization is difficult primarily because of the Taft-Hartley act. Now, this is in the end a result of the left passing the Wagner act. Under the Wagner act, unions had a pretty sweet deal. They could just run an election, get 50% of the votes, and become the official union for everybody at the company, and everyone now had to be parts of the union, whether they wanted to or not. The Taft-Hartley act, however, made it so that states could pass "right-to-work" laws, which prevented companies from making deals with unions that required everyone hired there to be part of the union. However, the union still has to represent everyone in the company, and I believe it also required all members of unions to get the same benefits package, because that's one of the provisions of the Wagner act. So in these states, literally the only reason you'd be in a union is if you want to pay union dues. Otherwise you get all of the benefits of being in a union. Taft-Hartley also explicitly prevent unionization for at most managerial and professional levels (which is one reason unions are only associated with blue-collar workers).
I'd like to revert back to how it was before the Taft-Hartley and Wagner acts. Unions should simply be organizations that workers choose to join, and union shouldn't have to represent non-members.
