I fail to see how that makes a punch deadly force.

One punch is serious bodily harm, defined as the loss or protracted loss of use of a limb or member, which could be caused by a broken bone(GZ suffered a broken nose, I believe)or unconsciousness. I am completely convinced that GZ did not think that fight was going to end with one punch though. And was concerned that subsequent blows to the head would possibly result in unconsciousness or even death.

Well there you have it. Sounds like negligence to me, which I believe is one of the lesser included charges. But will that be enough for the racist TM supporters?
