A winning candidate with only a slight margin of victory will have less power than one with a greater margin of victory. When GW Bush declared he had a mandate of the people with a 50.7% to 48.3% margin of victory, even Republicans knew he was full of shit. It hurt Bush and it hurt the party to push such a lie.

It's a civic duty to vote. We're the greatest democracy on Earth yet only ~60% of those eligible to vote show up on election day. That fact does not set a good example, IMO.
