Authorities are warning parents about gun safety after a child was injured in an accidental shooting in Birmingham.

A four-year-old was shot in a car in the 7700 block of 2nd Avenue South around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night, according to Bryan Shelton with the Birmingham Police Department.

Investigators said the shooting occurred after the child’s mother left her children in the car. One of the children found the gun and it discharged.

The bullet grazed the boy’s skull but did not enter it. He is in stable condition.

The gun used in the shooting of three Chicago police officers last week has been linked to a former Chicago officer who later joined a police force in the northern suburbs, the Tribune has learned.

Chicago police now are trying to figure out how the gun — originally purchased by a man who until Friday was a Lake County sheriff's deputy — ended up in the hands of 29-year-old Lamar Harris, a convicted felon with dozens of arrests who was killed in the shootout with police.

Multiple law enforcement sources confirmed that authorities investigating the shooting have traced the weapon that wounded the three officers back to the deputy.

That officer was fired from his job with the Lake County sheriff's department Friday after being placed on leave two days earlier, Rich Bruno, vice president of the Illinois Council of Police, the union representing the deputies, confirmed.

The county was not required to give a reason for the termination because the 27-year-old deputy was within a 12-month probationary period for new officers, Bruno said.

The union official said he wasn't privy to all the facts of the investigation into the shooting of the Chicago officers, but he added: "In regard to that incident, (the ex-deputy) had no involvement."

Bruno did not directly address whether he was told that investigators had traced the gun to the fired deputy, but he said: "To the best of my knowledge, (the gun) was reported stolen." He did not say when the report was made or by whom.

Lake County Undersheriff Ray Rose confirmed the deputy left the department last Friday but would not elaborate on the circumstances.

One of the law enforcement sources said the deputy, when questioned by investigators, told them he had not realized the gun was missing. The source said the investigation has revealed that the deputy has purchased at least 45 guns.

Authorities say a man who was terminally ill is dead after a shooting at a southwest Florida home police were called to.

Cape Coral police said in a statement that officers responded to the home Thursday evening following a report of a terminally ill man with a gun.

When officers arrived, police say the man came outside and started shooting at officers. An officer returned fire and the man went back inside the house. Officers then heard a shot from inside the house. They found the man dead inside.

No officers were injured.

Investigators remained at the home throughout the night.

The agency says the officer who fired the weapon will be on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Police haven't released the name or race of the officer or the man.

The National Rifle Association’s nrafamily.com website is featuring pro-firearms nursery stories.

Hansel and Gretel Have Guns, written by Amelia Hamilton and posted last week, is accompanied by a picture of the titular siblings lost in the forest, as is traditional, but they’re supplied with rifles.

The story opens with their family bemoaning their lack of food, and deviates from the classic text with the lines: “Fortunately, they had been taught how to use a gun and had been hunting with their parents most of their lives. They knew that, deep in the forest, there were areas that had never been hunted where they may be able to hunt for food. They knew how to keep themselves safe should they find themselves in trouble.”

Not falling foul of the witch in her gingerbread cottage themselves, they instead find other (unarmed) children held prisoner: “The boys directed Hansel to the key that would unlock their cage while Gretel stood at the ready with her firearm just in case, for she was a better shot than her brother.”

Another story published on the site follows a similar theme – Little Red Riding Hood Has A Gun. Red is off to visit grandma, as usual, but when she’s approached by the predatory wolf things unfold rather differently: “As she grew increasingly uncomfortable, she shifted her rifle so that it was in her hands and at the ready. The wolf became frightened and ran away.”

In the NRA re-telling, little old grandma doesn’t fall foul of the salacious beast either. The story doesn’t get as far as the wolf gobbling her up and the usual “what big eyes you’ve got” exchange, it stalls when grandma whips out her scattergun. What a big gun you’ve got.

Author Amelia Hamilton is described on the site as “a lifelong writer and patriot” who is also “a conservative blogger” and author of the Growing Patriots series of children’s books.

The site’s editors write: “Have you ever wondered what fairy tales might sound like if Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel had firearms?”

Three friends in Walton County, Georgia, thought it would be a good idea to get their guns out and fire at a lawnmower.

Even more bizarrely, they thought it would be a good idea to fill the machine with Tannerite – an explosive – first.

Unsurprisingly the whole thing blew up, so violently that one of the men, 23-year-old David Presley, lost his leg.

Two men are facing reckless conduct charges in an accidental shooting.

"After careful review of video with the Cook County State's Attorney's office, it was clear that charges should be considered," said Northlake Chief of Police Norman Nissen, Jr.

Luis Hernandez is a store manager who accidentally shot an employee.

Hernandez said he saw a firearm sitting on a desk that belongs to another store manager. When Hernandez touched the gun, he accidentally fired a bullet that traveled through the wall of the security office and into the front end of the store, striking a 41-year-old employee while he was bagging groceries, police said.

Lewisville Police are investigating an accidental shooting that happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning near the Flower Mound border.

Police believe the victim was shot in the face accidentally with a rifle at a home in the 1600 block of Glenhill, near Garden Ridge and College.

For some reason someone at the location decided to drive the victim to the hospital instead of calling for an ambulance. They made it as far as the intersection of Garden Ridge and Main Street.

Flower Mound police originally responded to the call, and Flower Mound paramedics treated the victim. The victim was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

Deputies said a man died Wednesday morning after being shot while sitting in a car with his wife, according to Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said Carl Francis Burden, 35, was in a car with his wife in the parking lot of a business on Blacksburg Highway around 4 a.m. when he was shot.

Mueller said he was shot through the windshield while the car was parked outside the gates of the old Cemex Plant.

After the shooting, Fowler said Burden's wife drove him to Mary Black Health System, where he was pronounced dead.

Mueller said this is not a random crime.

Lt. Sheila Cole with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office said shell casings were found in the area around the porch.

Cole also said deputies have not identified a possible suspect in the case.

A 16-year-old boy is under arrest after accidentally shooting his sister, according to Port St. Lucie police.

Police say the teen was sitting in his bedroom when a .357 handgun discharged. They say the bullet went through a wall and fragments struck his 14-year-old sibling in the next bedroom.

When officers arrived to investigate, the brother denied being involved and said the bullet went through a window after being shot by a passing car.

Crime scene investigators were called and using lasers determined that could not have happened because the wall the bullet struck is at a 90 degree angle from the window.

Police say after the shooting the teen went outside, broke the window and hid the firearm.

Using a K-9 police say they found the weapon across the street from the home.

According to police, investigators determined the 16-year-old was sitting in a chair in his bedroom when the gun went off.

He's been charged with possession of a firearm by a minor.
