The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has identified the man who shot himself at a Hudson Kmart Saturday as David Harris Shafley, 52, of Port Richey.

Shafley, of 7441 Sea Moritz Drive, shot himself in the head with a .22-caliber handgun after loss-prevention employees took him to a back room to question him about a pack of rechargeable batteries and a soda he was suspected of stealing, according to the sheriff's office.

Shafley pulled out the gun in the back room and fired at the door as two employees ran out.

Shortly after that first blast, Shafley again fired the gun, this time at his head.

He was pronounced dead at Bayonet Point Hospital.
