A California veteran of the Afghanistan War was hospitalized Saturday, the day after being paralyzed by gunshots at his welcome-home party, his family said.

Family members said Army Spc. Christopher Sullivan, 22, of San Bernadino, who survived a suicide bombing while in the war zone last December, was paralyzed after being shot twice Friday night in his hometown, The (San Bernardino) Sun reported.

"My son didn't deserve this. He served his country," said his mother, Suzanne Sullivan of San Bernardino.
Police said Sullivan, who is stationed at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, was home on leave.

Bernardino police Lt. Gwendolyn Waters told The Sun Saturday Sullivan was wounded when he tried to break up an argument between his brother and a man outside the home where 30-40 people were partying.

Waters said the man, described as a Latino in his 20s, punched Sullivan's brother and then pulled a gun from his waistband and fired at least three shots.

Four women and three men, aged 18 to 60, were found in an adjoining kitchen and living room area when police entered the apartment around midday, said Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling.

Two handguns were found near the bodies in the apartment that was decorated for the holiday with a tree, he added.

"It appears they had just celebrated Christmas. They had opened their gifts," Eberling said.

The victims have not yet been identified, but Eberling said it appears they all died of gunshot wounds.

In a dramatic video hearing at 10:30 this morning, a Dover woman admits to trying to "scare" her boyfriend on Christmas morning.

According to court documents Jessica Rivera Padilla, 24, held a gun to her boyfriend's head, Shaheen Michaels, 25.

Documents also say, she told police her boyfriend was threatening suicide, and drinking.

With the gun up against his head, behind his left ear, court documents say Padilla said "Is this what you want for our future?," then fired the gun.

She insists the shot was accidental and she did not think the gun was loaded.

The case was ruled a homicide, and the cause of death a gun shot to the head.
