Police say a brief argument led to the shooting death of a teenager in a neighborhood.

Seventeen-year-old Martavious Taveros Johnson, of Waterloo, died at a hospital after he was shot Thursday night.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (http://bit.ly/zJqesb ) says police say Johnson was walking with friends to an acquaintance's house around 8 p.m. when someone approached them. Police say words were exchanged, and the suspect pulled a gun and fired.

Kaylen Torres' family buried the 2-year-old Ocoee girl Thursday after her death on New Year's Eve from a gunshot wound.

The child's death was disclosed during a federal court hearing Friday for a cousin, Luis Javier Farias-Mendoza, who admitted accidentally shooting her the day after Christmas, according to an affidavit presented to U.S. Magistrate Gregory J. Kelly.

The shooting drew widespread attention that increased after Torres' family disagreed with doctors at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, who determined she was brain dead without a chance of recovery.

Torres' family declined to comment further on the shooting last week.

The shooting happened about 3 p.m. Dec. 26 at the family's Jemima Avenue home.

Farias-Mendoza, 21, later told police he was putting away a pistol in his room when it fired accidentally, according to police.

A .22-caliber bullet went through the wall and struck his cousin Kaylen in the head as she sat on a pillow in the room next door.

At least 13 people were wounded in gun violence across the city.

Most of those injured were shot in one hour-long period in the early afternoon of the unusually warm January day.

During that hour, three adults and a teen boy were wounded in an attack in the West Side Garfield Park neighborhood when at least two shooters walked up to them about 2:50 p.m. in the 200 block of North Kenneth Avenue and opened fire, police said.

A 24-year-old man shot in the chest was the most severely wounded among them, and was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in serious condition, police said.

A 14-year-old boy was shot twice in the leg.

An 18-year-old man was also shot in the right leg, while a 22-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the foot, police said.

Five minutes later, two 25-year-old men were wounded in a drive-by shooting, also on the West Side in the 3500 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said.

One of the men was shot multiple times and taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Less than an hour before that, a 33-year-old woman walking in the 5600 block of South Seeley Avenue at 1:59 p.m. heard gunfire and was shot in the leg, police said.

Other gun-related attacks included a shooting in the 5500 block of South King Drive about 1:13 p.m. that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back, police said.

At 3:20 p.m., a man in the 1700 block of West 51st Street was shot and taken to Holy Cross Hospital.

On the Northwest Side, a 21-year-old man was shot in the chest and critically wounded about 3:20 p.m. when someone in a dark-colored sedan drove by and opened fire in the 3600 block of West Lawrence Avenue, police said.

At 10:30 p.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 500 block of North Monticello Avenue, police said.

The shooting stemmed from a domestic situation and police are looking for the alleged shooter, the 48-year-old brother of the victim’s boyfriend.

At 11:45 p.m., two men were shot in a drive-by shooting at 50 W. 85th St., police said.

A 33-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the head and a gunshot wound to the foot while another man was shot in the forearm.

A man survived being shot in the upper chest Friday morning after being treated at Alton and St. Louis hospitals.
Capt. Scott Waldrup, of the Alton Police Department, said detectives still were investigating the circumstances surrounding the wounding of Orlandus Lacey, 35, of Alton.

The cases of two children who fatally shot themselves in separate incidents in December have been forwarded to the Clark County district attorney's office for review, a Las Vegas police official said Thursday.

On Dec. 13, a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl shot themselves at different times and in separate homes in the Las Vegas Valley while adults were nearby.

Lisa Teele, supervisor for the Metropolitan Police Department's Abuse and Neglect Detail, said the crux of each case is that the children shouldn't have had access to the weapons.

"The children obtained unsecured weapons," Teele said. "We're really emphasizing here as caretakers and parents that we have a responsibility in securing firearms to keep our children safe."

Teele wouldn't say whether police recommended charges against adults in either case, but she said the adults involved could face felony child endangerment charges.

The Clark County coroner's office determined that the 13-year-old, Marina Momcheva, died from a gunshot wound to the head in a suicide.

She died Dec. 18.

Marina was an eighth-grader at Bailey Middle School.
Police said she shot herself the night of Dec. 13 at a home in the 2100 block of Dragon Claw Lane, near Lake Mead and Hollywood boulevards.

Earlier that day, 10-year-old Kameron Asgari shot himself after finding a weapon at a home in the 5800 block of Ponderosa Way, near Russell Road and Jones Boulevard.

The Jydstrup Elementary School fifth-grader shot himself about 2:45 p.m. Police investigated his shooting as either an accident or suicide.

The coroner's office hasn't yet determined whether the death was an accident or suicide.

Child shooting deaths tied to unsecured weapons is not uncommon in Southern Nevada.

In December, 37-year-old Sidney J. Jacobs was charged with one count of child abuse and neglect with substantial bodily harm in the Sept. 25 death of 6-year-old Robert Martin IV.

The boy was fatally shot by his 11-year-old uncle at Jacobs' Henderson home.

The older boy told police he found the 9 mm handgun in a cardboard box labeled "treasure chest" and thought it was a toy.

He pointed it at his nephew and pulled the trigger, expecting confetti to shoot from the barrel, according to a police report.

Jacobs and his girlfriend were in an upstairs bedroom drinking vodka and listening to music while the two boys played downstairs in a room filled with toys, police said.

Jacobs faces a preliminary hearing in Henderson on Feb. 16.

At dawn a shot rang out near the residence of Jeanne Russo on Bayview Avenue in Berkley.

The gunshot woke Russo.

Guessing it was nothing, Russo went back to sleep.

Later, however, she awoke to discover the round had struck a window in the rear of her house — a window roughly 4 feet from where her 95-year-old mother-in-law sleeps.

A 59-year-old white male apparently shot himself and died Friday in a South S Street home after refusing to surrender to bail bond agents.

"We were concerned for him. Several of our tactical unit members were on duty at the time," Sgt. Daniel Grubbs, Fort Smith Police Department public information officer, said Friday. "They paired up. We used bunkers to make entry into the home and found him deceased inside from what appears to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds."

He said agents of JE Bonding of Fort Smith called police at about 3:30 p.m. to report shots fired.
