State conservation officers say a federally endangered whooping crane found dead in southern Indiana suffered a fatal shotgun wound.

Conservation officers were notified of the shooting by Dan Kaiser, a tracker and photographer with the International Whooping Crane Foundation.

Kaiser found the rare bird's carcass near the Muscatatuck River basin about 40 miles north of Louisville, Ky.

Conservation officers said X-rays show the bird suffered a fatal shotgun wound.

A monetary reward is being offered for any information leading to prosecution of the responsible parties in the bird's death.
