Three men were found in a parked $88,000 gray BMW a block away from Columbia's campus on West 122nd Street.

Police have not yet identified the men who all appear to be in their twenties or thirties, each of them shot in the neck.

The passenger was wearing a Yankee hat and a white T-shirt, blood soaked.

Because the windows are intact and no bullet holes mark the doors, police believe the shots were fired from inside.

An Oakland County K9 officer fatally shot his own police dog today when the 5-year-old purebred German shepherd attacked him after recently showing signs of aggression, according to a news release.

The incident occurred at a veterinarian’s office, where the sheriff’s deputy had taken Gunner, who had been a member of the county’s K9 unit since 2007, the release said.

The deputy, a 23-year veteran of the department and 5-year police dog handler, took Gunner to the vet to explore “options available to curb his aggression,” police said. But while the deputy and the veterinarian were trying to attach a leash to the dog, Gunner leaped in a biting lunge toward the deputy’s face, and he blocked the dog with his forearm, the release said.

The dog kept biting the deputy and refused commands to let go, so the deputy drew his gun and shot him.

“This is an extremely sad situation,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a written statement. “These dogs are more than a police asset. They are beloved members of the department and the handler’s family.”

Wonder if they’ll keep that in mind when they’re dealing with other families’ “beloved members.”

James Butwin died of a gunshot wound that was likely self-inflicted, Pima County officials said.

His wife, Yafit, 40, and their three children — Malissa, 16; Daniel, 14; and Matthew, 7 — also died of gunshot wounds, said Dr. Gregory Hess, chief medical examiner in Pima County.

Hess said they likely were shot in their Tempe home before being driven to the desert in Pinal County, where James Butwin likely shot himself.

A DeKalb County, Ala., man was shot and killed after aiming a firearm at officers during a foot chase on Friday, according to authorities.

In a news release, Sheriff Jimmy Harris said a DeKalb deputy and an Alabama Highway Patrol officer tried to stop a four-wheeler on state Highway 117.

Instead of stopping, the driver, later identified as Monroe Smith, turned onto a secondary road, then drove off the road onto private property with the officers in pursuit.

The officers saw Smith pick up a firearm before he abandoned the vehicle and ran.

When the officers approached, Smith pointed the firearm at them.

Smith ignored commands to drop his weapon and kept pointing it at the officers, so they opened fire...

Coroner Tom Wilson pronounced Smith dead on the scene...
