Billions in taxpayer dollars now go to religious schools via vouchers

Billions in taxpayer dollars are being used to pay tuition at religious schools throughout the country, as state voucher programs expand dramatically and the line separating public education and religion fades.

School vouchers can be used at almost any private school, but the vast majority of the money is being directed to religious schools, according to a Washington Post examination of the nation’s largest voucher programs.

Apparently parents trust religious institutions to instill good values and higher levels of education than public schools or woke secular private schools.
Wring your hands.

In general, of course they do, just like private colleges generally offer a better education than State colleges.

And they should, private schools can flush students they don’t want, they can pick and choose who they admit, public schools can not be selective, they have to educate anyone who walks thru the door, it is the law

The question becomes is it right for the taxpayer to pay for the education of the chosen at the cost of lost funding for public schools?
Not mentioned is that many religious individuals still have to pay property taxes (those who don't cheat to avoid same)

Part of the property tax bill is for school funding. Many states fund schools primarily on this school tax.

If a religious person is forced to pay taxes without using the public school system, then I guess at some level this is fair.

Which doesn't negate the rampant fraud and graft in many religious communities that allows them to pay any taxes. Or pack local school boards and shut down public school programs and fund religious schools.

Because it is not the duty of the US to pay for religious education.
It's also not the duty of businesses to fund public schools. Same for families that don't use the schools. But it's the system we have. State income tax should be used to fund schools so that renters can also contribute. In NY, property taxes fund our schools. Renters pay no property tax.

Renters pay the landlord and landlord passes it on as property tax.

There's also no reason to create a monopoly. Make government schools EARN parents' trust. Don't force poor/low income kids to go to shitty government schools. Give parents the power to direct their tax money as they see fit.

I don't agree. Education is to help all citizens.

Renters pay the landlord and landlord passes it on as property tax.
That's a common argument that doesn't quite pass muster. Sure...in a perfect world rents would cover all expenses. When your tax bill goes up you cannot simply hike rent to cover. Especially if you have a rare good tenant that you really don't want to lose.

More recently, insurance costs are going up exponentially. These costs don't automatically get passed along.

Landlords raise rents all the time. Quite common.

Then you have education deserts in ghettos.

That's a huge mistake.

Organized religion is bad.

Yes. I went to a very good public school. But then, I did my work and did not blame others for any shortcoming.
Ok. What about all the public schools that are bad, dangerous, etc and the parents want to get their kids a good education?
