I think the reasonable answer is that all Americans are given equal protection and rights under the law. In the majority, in the minority, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, age, economic status, educational status, we make the law equal for everyone.
Which is why (to introduce another rabbit trail) some sort of campaign finance reform is so important. There are groups on the right who also deserve to be able to make their viewpoint known, and are being held back because they cannot finance candidates. Making everyone equal from a legal standpoint and allowing groups who are not heavily financed to back candidates would do a lot to make our society much better, IMHO.
And this would include allowing gay people to marry. Hell, 1100 gay people or something like that got married in Utah in the brief time marriage was briefly allowed there. We've probably got more than 1100 posts here ranting and not telling us why gay marriage is wrong.
