The rhetoric is consistent on both sides. Harris was called a communist & socialist who was out to destroy the country. Trump repeated "you're not going to have a country anymore" just before the riot of J6.

LGBTQ people are just people. It's very sad that some look on them as "freaks" - they're just trying to make their way in life like the rest of us are.

And the vast majority of them don't appreciate the noisy radical wing making them stand out in a non flattering manner.

This thread didn't pan out - but I appreciate the sentiment here, Stone.

I think the internet has heightened the division in America. When I interact w/ people who disagree w/ me politically in life - my job, my neighbors, a baseball game - it's really no big deal, and we all do have mostly common ground. We all want clean air, good jobs, security, equality, peace. There is way more that we have in common than not.

But the internet & media pushes the extremes & the differences.

Agreed the Internet heightens division but it goes back just a little earlier with the advent of cable news. 24 hour news channels need a lot of filler to take up time. The Gulf War didn't need filler but peace time does. Since "news" is a business they provide what customers like: Sex, Blood and Controversy. Can't show a lot of sex even on cable news, but the blood and controversy are pretty easy even if the controversy is artificially heightened. Combine cable news controversies and the Internet creates an emotionally laden and divisive stew.

That said, I've been online and in discussion forums for almost 30 years. Although all the forums had some political discussions real names were used. I've only been on anonymous username political forums for a little over 20 years. In that time, it's been my observation that, like "a drunk man's words are a sober man's thoughts", the anonymity of such forums allows people to speak their minds. In short, they can live their fantasies and/or say exactly what they think about different issues with little social repercussions such as being known as a racist, misogynist or other bigoted asshole.

While it's very difficult to know for sure, I believe people who are bigots or selfish assholes can't help but be so IRL after a few years of participating in such forums. If so, it will adversely affect their jobs and relations with both family and friends.

This is why I'm very curious about @Stone's flip-flop on this thread. Is he in trouble? Is his brother's business in trouble? Is it just a ruse?
 
The rudeness and name calling was sanctioned by Trump who dropped political rhetoric to levels few would have thought possible. He led the Repub party down a dark and ugly path that they may never escape from. when the leader is foul and low as he is, his followers will get worse. They have.
