'SC - Notre Dame

Another issue with giving conference champions an automatic spot is that it makes all nonconference games irrelevant.

For the purposes of making the playoffs, Michigan would have been undefeated. The loss to Notre Dame would not have mattered at all.

Oh, and about our quarterback. He is just a left fielder who is basically just playing this season for fun...and yet he’s making a strong bid for the Heisman even against the vaunted Tua.

As things stand now let's look at the games that "mean" something. Louisville, U-L Lafayette, Arkansas State, The Citadel ffs. A four team playoff encourages some teams to spend 4 or 5 weeks per season baking cupcakes. Everyone schedules a patsy but Bama has turned it into an art form. The only thing more disgraceful than Bama in the playoff again, win or lose against UGA, would be Notre Dame in the playoff. In the B1G ND would be a 3 or 4 loss team.

16 teams, all conference champions automatically in, even the Group of 5.

Louisville has been an 8+ win team since 2010, with a couple of those being 10+ win seasons.

And just which team do you think doesn't schedule cupcakes? Most open the season with them. Since Saban arrived, Alabama typically schedules a fairly potent team for the opening game. Do you want to go with the "Saban cheats!" accusations next?

Louisville stepped up to the ACC and sucks. I also have never accused Saban of cheating but he can do some things teams in other conferences can't do, like spread the cupcakes out throughout the schedule in order to give his teams recovery weeks. Some teams can't do that without a waiver from their conference. The Citadel? Mercer? U-L Lafayette? What's the matter, William & Mary wasn't available? The pressure to win just to get into a 4 team invitational tournament encourages teams to play games no one wants to see, Exhibit A is Alabama.

Once again, do you have a suggestion of a team that does not schedule cupcakes? Some cupcakes are even conference games.

Just stop it. Mercer last year, The Citadel this year, a very weak ACC team and two Sun Belt teams. Bama went above and beyond when it comes to scheduling cupcakes. Your everyone does it argument is just silly.

Right. But I notice you don't offer a team that doesn't schedule cupcakes. The idea that everyone does it IS the point.

Make it a level playing field and I'm good with it. But as long as Michigan has Rutgers, SMU and the like on their schedule, or other teams doing the same, you have no point.

Michigan has no say in playing Rutgers and you know it. We're talking about Bama scheduling non-conference cupcakes. Granted WMU and SMU aren't strong teams but Michigan kicked off with Notre Dame and played against zero FCS teams. OSU played one non-power 5 team this season zero FCS teams. If they beat Northwestern they should be in over Bama. We could go on and on. There aren't many teams who think they're contenders who schedule an FCS team and two Sun Belt teams.

A cupcake is a cupcake. Whether they are an FCS team or not. And just a reminder, one of those Sunbelt teams, Troy, beat Nebraska by the same margin that Ohio State did. Another lost to Penn State in overtime. In other words, better teams than SMU or Oregon State.

Just because a team is a member of a major conference doesn't mean much. Oregon State finished the regular season 2-10. Last year they were 1-11.

Don't like the way it works? Petition to change the rules. Otherwise, I'll see you in the playoffs.

Oregon State is an FBS team and plays in a power 5 conference. Last year the Buckeyes played Oklahoma. Bama doesn't have those Purdue type games because they don't have to play the bigger, stronger guys every week. I shouldn't have to petition to change the rules because even with this fucked up system strength of schedule is supposed to mean something. If you like it that's great but it's not a legitimate playoff.

7 of the 12 teams on our schedule have ended the season ranked in the top 10 over the last 10 years. And an 8th opponent has ended at #11 just 4 years ago. So the claim that we don't play big strong teams is laughable. The fact that Alabama is bigger and stronger shows better recruiting, training and coaching.
