Edison woman accidentally runs over, kills husband while clearing snow

EDISON — An Edison couple's routine effort to clear snow from their Tyroler Avenue driveway turned tragic Friday morning, when the wife, backing out from the driveway in the couple’s car, ran over her husband and killed him, police said.

Police found Joseph Gallof, 70, pinned under the couple’s car around 8:30 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Joseph Gallof’s death was an accident and that no charges are being filed against Carole Gallof, 69.

“The car was covered with snow. She was using her rear view mirror. She called to him, and apparently he didn’t hear her,” Edison police Chief Thomas Bryan said.

A family friend, Rabbi Deborah Bravo of Temple Emanu-el, answered the phone at the Gallof home and called the accident "a terrible tragedy."

"This is a horrible loss for the family," Bravo said. "He was a beloved man and he will be missed."

As in all fatalities, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office will conduct its own investigation.

Wrong-way teen driver kills man

A teenager drove her car into oncoming traffic on a major southwest metro highway, struck a car head-on and killed that driver, authorities said Friday.

The State Patrol said at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday on Hwy. 169, just north of Jordan, a 17-year-old girl was heading south, crossed the median and hit a northbound car.

Killed was Zachary Anderson, 27, of St. James, Minn., family members said.

Anderson's stepfather, Jeffrey Benson, said that Anderson had leukemia as a child, but "we were blessed to have him as a child and for as long as we did."

Anderson and a friend, Will Sizer, 28, also of St. James, were heading to the Twin Cities when the crash occurred, Benson said. Sizer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the patrol, which told the family that Anderson was not using his cell phone, was not under the influence of alcohol and was wearing his seat belt.

The still-unnamed teen was hurt but expected to survive.

Chalmette man opens fire, thwarts vehicle burglary(LA)

Two young men trying to burglarize a truck in Chalmette got the worst of it when one got his arm rolled over by the getaway driver and the other was shot at by the owner of the vehicle, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy James Pohlmann said.

Both men escaped in a gray Dodge following the 7 p.m. incident Wednesday night in the 2300 block Corinne Drive. The truck's owner, who came outside of his home with a handgun when he saw someone climbing into his vehicle, told deputies he thought he hit the driver of the getaway car when he fired twice after the driver allegedly pointed a gun at him, authorities said.

No residents of the neighborhood were injured.

The burglar who was trying to break into the truck ran toward the getaway vehicle when he saw the gun-wielding owner. As he tried to climb into the moving can, the suspect fell to the ground and his right arm was rolled over by the car's right rear tire, authorities said.

Milky Bar kid, three, drives into parked police car

Police officers were left stunned when they saw a car crash into their parked vehicle - and discovered that a three-year-old boy was responsible.

Oliver Willment-Coster was left strapped into the passenger seat of the white Proton by his father, Jeffrey who went into a shop to buy his son a Milky Bar.

But the youngster managed to take the car out of gear, release the handbrake, then steer 15 yards down the road. He came to a sudden stop when the car smashed into the police vehicle.

Mr Coster became aware of the incident only when a police officer entered the shop and asked: "Does anyone have a white car?"

The 54-year-old lorry driver ran from the store in Bournemouth, Dorset, and found his son unharmed and sitting in the passenger seat with the belt still around him.

All the boy said was: "Have you got my Milky Bar?" Mr Coster said he would never leave his son in the car again. "It is what thousands of parents do every day. I never thought he would be able to take the handbrake off."
