Have We Entered The Next Dark Ages?

PoliTalker

Diversity Makes Greatness
Poverty is rampant across the globe.

Disease spreading far and wide.

Pollution worse than ever.

The very climate of the planet is in peril.

Species loss greater than it has been in thousands of years.

Political factions becoming increasingly polarized.

Leadership failing, spreading propaganda, acting selfishly.

Hatred and misunderstanding growing, capitalism selling anger.

Major institutions threatened.

Lifespans are shortening. Threats abound.

Are we improving the human condition or is it in the process of deterioration?

Fast forward hundreds of years into the future. Will this age be looked back upon with admiration or sorrow?

Technological advances and innovation of the present were fantasy dreams 4 , 5 decades ago.No major wars since Vietnam which had less casualtes than the Korean War, nothing compared to even battles in WW I.

Good morning anonymoose,

Any of those tech advances able to bring back extinct species?

How about can they remove the massive swirling gyres of sloting plastic from each of the world's oceans, much less the sinking microplastics which threaten the basic creatures of the food chain of the seas?

Have you read about the theory of humans peaking and are now on a decline?

No why? Species have always gone extinct. As to the plastic they're working on it. The sky is not falling. Life is good (relatively).
Of course I did just recently retire.

Oh, my.

I was looking for something to pick up my spirits.

Now I'm gonna go into my bar and "pick up" my spirits.

;)

Species are just recently going extinct at an unprecedented rate.

Yes, I am aware of floating plastics recovery efforts and ideas, and I understand these efforts are all experimental and not being rolled out on a massive scale. I was intrigued by the one that harnesses the energy of waves to actually gather floating plastic, but I also understand that the regions where plastics gather don't have a lot of waves. And this does NOTHING about the way the plastics degrade into microplastics and sink to the great depths of the ocean where plankton form.

Capitalism brought us plastic, brought is disposable this and disposable that. There was no plan for what to do with all the trash. As a result, humans have trashed our planet. This has all occurred during the lives of baby boomers. It wasn't like that before that generation. It doesn't seem very responsible to do that so a few executives and investors can be absurdly rich and able to own polluting airplanes and yachts.

Hello anonymoose,

Maybe we need a major war to get us back on track. You know, one where 70 - 85 million perished like WW II , something like 3% of the world population? It's be like the world getting an enema.

If we have a nuclear war it would be more dead than that.

I keep things in perspective. I know people who survived the Gulag, survived Nazi occupation, survived occupation by the Imperial Japanese Army.

I think we are doing substantial damage to Earth's ecological health and to our long term welfare. Resource depletion will continue unabated without serious changes in our behaviour.

As long as we continue to honor the premise of liberal democracy, there remains the opportunity to influence national policy and priorities. I think the most effective thing that could happen is to remove the corrupting influence of money from politics. Almost all ecological destruction the planet faces originates from the profit motive and the special interests of powerful and wealthy entities
