Florida book bans - the first step before burning

What may be appropriate to one child may not be to the another. Children learn from their parents so who better to decide what books the school gives access to. In an ideal world parents would decide what is taught in school. As that is impossible the we must leave the decisions to the school system. This whole rigamarol is purely politically driven, you are progressive so you endorse liberal ideals. I onthe other hand am more conservative thus I endorse a more conservative approach. Neither of us is totally correct. As to this latest Desantis scandal children will not be harmed. Some things you endorse will most likely be taught at a later date.
Why? If you are failing your children at home, then it makes sense that the school needs to step up. Only terrible parents blame the school for how their kids turn out.

During Covid, our school buses went to the house of every student who qualified for free lunch, and handed out food. For some, school lunch is the only good meal they get during the day.

I love that story. They fed the kids here too but most districts didn't have the resources to deliver them. That's beautiful yours did!

Didn't say that!!!! I asked, do you believe porn should be a part of sex ed?
When I was in 6th grade, we all got to attend a sex ed. class where they showed a film about adolescence, changes to the body, etc.. There was no actual sex being taught, but you know that.

When I went to school we didn't need sex ed. We already knew about stds, pregnancy, gays, and perverts.
Too bad your mommy and daddy didn't teach you about the birds and the bees.
You're a young un then.

Where did you learn all of that? Behind the school during recess?

Funding school districts properly has zilch to do with freedom -- other than educating citizens is a good way to keep it. We already pay taxes. Distributing it equitably is the issue here.
Most people retire to Southern states because the property taxes are very low. They don't have to worry about the lack of schools or services. The cost of living is a fraction of what it is up North where there are schools in most towns/villages.

Property values vary in different areas, and so do the taxes. Without an income tax to help fund schools, it would suck to pay twice in taxes than that of another town, but receive less funding for education. Quite a few people opt for certain areas because the schools are better.

A lot of that has to do with the quality of the students, and the parents. Funding only goes so far.

That's exactly what Mr. Owl said when I bitched about how could that many Americans be so fucking STUPID to believe he was all that. I sure got the stupid part down right.
It's certainly more complex than that. '16 was as much about who didn't vote, as it was about who did. These were two candidates with record low approval ratings. Bernie was basking in the wave of negativity he was able to perpetrate against Hillary. Add to that the laundry list of lies that trump told about what he planned to do once in office, and it all came together to create the most dangerous administration in our nation's history.

We barely made it out alive.

Our taxes are astronomical.

I guess the buses would be running every day anyway, and the food would rot in the refrigerators. They made the decision to deliver it.

Disagreed on funding and freedom. It's all tied together.

Agreed, distribution is a problem. Maximizing the potential of all Americans is the best ideal, IMO. Which states are the best models in that regard? Balance that against jobs and standard of living.

Where does your state rank on the list of best school systems?

Defining Quality of Life
Quality of life is a measure of comfort, health, and happiness by a person or a group of people. Quality of life is determined by both material factors, such as income and housing, and broader considerations like health, education, and freedom. Each year, US & World News releases its “Best States to Live in” report, which ranks states on the quality of life each state provides its residents.

LOL. I'm suddenly reminded of Bristol Palin's 'abstinence only tour', when she got knocked up.

Twice.

The Palin girls are hot!

Wow, that happened in h.s. when I was a kid. PE was segregated then so the boys went to one side of the gym, the girls to the other, and there was a divider down the middle. The PE teacher (Mrs. Jones) showed us a film about puberty and body changes and menstrual periods and how a baby grows in the womb and some stuff about sperm and eggs and it takes both to make a person, but that was about it. No clue what the boys learned about but it was no doubt similar. That was in the late 60s and even then parents had to sign a permission slip for that education. There was a Q&A session afterwards, as I recall. But only a few questions, prob. because embarrassment and/or no one wanted to exhibit sexual ignorance in front of her peers.

Guys we are not living in the stone ages, book burnings do not and can not stop anybody wishing to learn from learning. We have in our mist a thing called the internet and you can learn just about anything your little ol heart desires. What Florida is doing is really rather comical....they burned popular sneakers, two years later the sales went through the roof, same things with Cd's....news flash, lets all say 2023 out loud and not 1823.

You do realize that's not how teaching works.....

I have moved past wondering if Toxic Top has ever been a teacher, she has not, and on to wondering if she has ever had a job. She says that a good teacher would continue teaching through the Holocaust, and any that fled due to the Holocaust were showing some sort of personal failure. She is not tolerant of teachers who cannot afford to teach, and seems to think that they should be willing to do anything for any amount of money.

And she is surprised to hear that schools try to keep teachers for the entire year.

You say that TOP has never been a teacher.

To know that, you would have to know her name.

Post her name or admit that you were lying when you said she is not a teacher.

I’ll wait, Walter.

Poor Walter.

I see you lurking, Walter.

Are you trying to come up with some phony crap to attempt to cover up your lie about TOP?

Poor, poor Walter.
