Cancel Culture refers to a career being over due to something said or done, supposedly because people are too sensitive or something something Liberals.
It is not merely a celebrity getting some backlash.

According to Pop Culture dictionary: "Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive."

You can make the argument that people withdrew support for Mel Gibson after the things he did, but they gave him back their support a little while later. So if Cancel Culture is real, it's extremely ineffective.

We've always had censorship and that's mostly just limited to certain media. A movie being played on TV might get censored, but you can still see that movie uncut online or on DVD.
And likewise, no celebrity has been truly censored, because no celebrity has lost their career over things they've said.

It says that it's the practice of withdrawing support. If that happened, then careers would be over. The truth is, the public never really withdraws their support, so celebrities can continue doing projects.

The fact that these people keep getting jobs and doing projects after they say controversial things proves that few, if any, people are actually withdrawing their support. The fans are still paying to see their movies and TV shows.

The definition is saying it's a culture of people withdrawing support. So we're talking about people who were fans that decided to stop being fans. But the fact that there is still work for these celebrities shows that very few, if any, people are actually withdrawing support.

We could also go by your definition. Let's say it's just people who want them cancelled. Well, these people must not be very effective, since no celebrities ever stop getting work over things they said.
