It's OK to Be White
Their career operates at a much lower level than previously.
The same thing occurs on the right--people whose careers were hurt (if not destroyed) because of their political views: Kathy Griffin, Colin Kaepernick,
The two sides also do this to businesses--Chick Fil-A, Hobby Lobby, Nike, NFL,
Now that I do agree with. If a person or business becomes controversial, then of course they'll have less options. But there are three things to consider there.
First, it's always been like that. Controversy has always helped and hurt a person's career, so what we're seeing isn't a result of the Left being too sensitive because today's kids are all snowflakes or whatever. What we're seeing is just life.
Secondly, if a celebrity loses a deal, apologizes, and then gets welcomed back, that means they weren't cancelled. Sure, there might be some people who will never watch anything they're in again, but they still got forgiven by enough people to continue doing projects. And since not a single celebrity has been unable to come back, it's safe to say that very few people really practice cancelling.
Finally, controversy doesn't just hurt, it also helps. Chick-Fil-A might have lost customers, but they also gained a lot of business from homophobes.
