A simple question...

Can you share something with someone else that neither of you are in possession of?

while you cant reach out and touch it it still is very real and significant to the individual. And in a way tangible as they will obtain ownership of the music they love via CD, streaming, instruments etc.
It's a concept, not a tangible possession.

One can't share a tangible item they do not have with someone else.

This is common sense.

is it ?

this cake is delicious ! Try a bite ?

one hands their canteen with another, "have a sip, you look hot"

one takes the first section of the paper, hands the other to a second person to read

some things are portion able

No, not a possession as it is with a tangible item.
Only if it is tangible such as a CD. What about sharing time at a concert together?

We joke all that time about “that’s 10 minutes of my life I’ll never get back”. Time has value but no one possesses it much less stops it or rolls it back. Can’t give people some of your time per se, only your presence during that time like a mother with a child.

depends on your definition of "in possession of".
Like, I have a boat that I bought sitting in my yard. I can go touch that boat. I can take that boat out to the lake. That boat is in my possession.

two can share a love of music. is that a possession ?
I see where you're coming from. I guess I'm focusing more on just tangible things rather than emotions. A boat, a car, a screw driver, a CD, a generator, etc...

An idea IS possessed, actually... Ever heard of copyright law, for example?

No doubt a psycho like you wants to copyright the idea of Freedom or the Golden Rule, Sybil.

You must be a Maria Carey fan since she wants to copyright the name "Queen of Christmas".

True, but I'm more-so referring to tangible things.

And in a way tangible as they will obtain ownership of the music they love via CD, streaming, instruments etc.
...and can you share a CD that you don't have with someone else? That's what I'm getting at, and that's what Poor Richard Saunders is trying to say is possible to do.

Yup. You get what I'm saying here. It's very straightforward.

I cannot share a boat that I do not have with someone else. You and I cannot share a boat that neither of us has in our possession.

That's the test, Sybil; to see who is strictly tangible and who can think abstractly.

Let's say that I baked a cake from scratch. I own that cake. It is in my possession. It is mine. I can then "share" (IOW, gift a portion of it) to someone else. We both consume the cake and then it is gone. Gifting a portion of a cake to someone else is different than sharing a durable good such as a boat or a hammer with someone else.

one hands their canteen with another, "have a sip, you look hot"
Can you share a canteen that you do not have with someone else? That's what Poor Richard Saunders is trying to say is possible to do and that's what the point of this thread is about.

Here, I would be sharing a portion of the paper with someone else... IOW, I would be sharing my paper with someone else. Can I share a paper that I do not have in my possession with someone else?? THAT'S the point of this thread and what Richard is trying to pretend is possible to do...

some things are portion able
Right, but that misses the point I'm making with this thread.

you can share a drink from your canteen,
a bite of your entre,
the air conditioning in your home or car,
basically anything that is portionable.

Right, but that misses the point I'm making with this thread.

lets try this:

you and I both work for JPP Carpentry Inc.

we are supplied with all the tools necessary to do carpentry. The firm owns all this equipment but never uses it though the Prez could wander over and physically grasp any of it at will but he does share this equipment with you and I for us to use as needed to perform our duties.

you can share a drink from your canteen,
a bite of your entre,
the air conditioning in your home or car,
basically anything that is portionable.
... and with basically anything that is portionable and thus "shared", what you are really doing is gifting a portion of the whole to someone else. You're not sharing it (using it for a while and then returning it back to the other person so he can use it again) like you are doing with a boat or a hammer or a wood splitter.

Yet, in the cases that you present here, someone still needs to first own and be in possession of what is being portioned to someone else. I need to own/possess a cake in order to "share" a bit of that cake with someone else. I need to first own/possess the water... I need to first own/possess the entre... I need to first own/possess the home/car. THAT'S the whole point. If I don't first own/possess any of those things, then I can't share any of those things with anyone else.
