America Is on a Path to Turn into Detroit, and Republicans Are Cool with That?!!

Notice the diversity of industry. Pittsburgh and Detroit were both Boom Cities during WWII when Steel and Industry were needed.

When demands started to decline they both experienced White Flight in the 1950's and 1960's.

This is where the two cities went in opposite directions:

Pittsburgh Immediately started to diversify in the 1970's. Detroit did not.

Pittsburgh brought in Banking, Commercial development, Airlines, Building supplies, Cooperated with area universities to develop Health Management companies.

In Detroit the City is run by 13,500 people.
In Pittsburgh, Just half the size of Detroit, that number is 3500

dude how so?

why is it you chose to see ONLY one factor?

why do give a great big ole pass to the corporations which bailed on motown the second it made them money to do so?

why the great big ole pass to the ceos for not doing their job to help the industry remain competitive?

Why only blaming the corrupt assholes who owned the dem party in the city?

yes they were corrupt and they went to jail for their correuption huh?

And no one even fired the people that prosecuted them like The Bush team did when their guys got caught

Why did they refuse to build the cars that were being bought instead of refusing to retool and build something other than the hulking

Dude I lived it.

You should have heard what people were saying about them at the time

Why did they refuse to build the cars that were being bought instead of refusing to retool and build something other than the hulking crap heaps they were offering?

Really? You lived in Detroit? Where?

they TRIED to sell them nation wide smart ass

When did this all take place Desh? Are you trying to pretend that what happened in the 1980's/90's is what cause Detroit to go bankrupt now?

Are you ever going to acknowledge that the DEMS run the city? that they are the ones that controlled the budget?

You DO realize that if dems are responsible for the success of pittsburgh, they're equally responsible for the demise of Detroit.

Pittsburgh is a City run by Democrats... 100%

But... Many of these changes and their planning were put in place 40 years ago. They reduced the size of Government, provided incentives for new development. reorganized the schools, switched from Single industry (Steel/Aluminum) to Banking, Medicine, Technology and consumer goods.

Back when it started the Governor and the City Council worked together. The current crop of council members continues to put sound government before the gains of powerful municipal unions.

The Burgh has about 350,000 people, Detroit has 690,000 +/-.

Government in the Burgh is only 3500 people. Making it the 20th biggest employer
In Detroit it's 13,500. Making them the BIGGEST employer.

by simple comparison Detroit could easily reduce it's government by 6500 employees saving 100's of millions of Dollars.

Money that could be used for Police, Fire, EMS and other Public Services.

so far as schools go:

Detroit Public Schools:

Type Public
Country USA
Location Detroit, Michigan
District information
Budget US$ 1,237,494,733 (2011–12)[1]
Students and staff
Students 65,971 (2011–12)
Staff 15,535 (2007)[2]

and Pittsburgh Public Schools:

Type Public school
Grades Pre-K–12
Established 1794
Country United States
Location Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
District information
Superintendent Linda
Staff 5,180
Budget $542,600,000
Students and staff
Students 28,000
Athletic Conference PIAA District 8
Colors Black, Gold
Other information
Number of Schools 134 (2011–12)[1]
Teachers Unions Detroit Federation of Teachers[3]

Detroit has a little more than 2x the students(65,000), 3 times the Staff (15355), 3 times the Budget (1.3 Billion) and graduates 20% of Students.

By comparison DPS could effectively eliminate 8000+ Employees and save 100's of Millions more.

How is Pittsburgh doing more with less and Detroit is always there with it's hand out?

Proper management... Plain and Simple management.

Detroit should look to Pittsburgh to see how it's done.

Detroit is also MUCH bigger than pittsburg. By an order of magnitude.
