And you can break it down even further with the Muslim Brotherhood: which are distinguishable from the Salifis insofar as the MB will embrace modernity and democratic processes [at least until they get elected].
Salifis advocate a return to 7th century Islam...they are what most people think of in terms of radical Islam. But the MB only differs in terms of strategy: their end game is still Muslim dominance. And I'm pretty sure the State Department believes that any Muslim group that isn't Salifist is a moderate group. If what happened in Egypt is any indication.
In my own lexicon I've taken to using the term Islamist for any Muslim or Muslim group that advocates sharia law for infidels. That covers all the bases.
But the Salifis present the most immediate danger. There is no dealing with them.
