Another year, more California 'exes' are living in Texas

The conservatives had control of California starting with Governor Reagan.
By the time the Republicans lost their majorities in The Golden State, we were on the verge of selling off schools, fire stations, public libraries, anything to shore up the bankruptcies.

"...but liberals are destroying it" my rosy red butt, do you even live in California?
If so, what area?
I live in East Los Angeles.
There have certainly been Republican Governors in California (Reagan, Deukmejian, Wilson and Arnold). But Democrats have basically controlled the state legislature since 1970.

I did find this regarding the state senate: "Republicans controlled the state Senate with majorities from 1896 to 1956. Democrats split the chamber 20-20 in the 1956 elections, and they won a majority in 1958. From 1958 to 2022, Democrats controlled the chamber except for when it was split evenly in 1968 and 1972, both years when native Californian Richard Nixon (R) was elected president."

And I saw this regarding the state Assembly:
"Republicans controlled the assembly from 1942 to 1956. Between 1958 and 1994, the only election where Republicans won a majority was 1968, the same year that Republican Richard Nixon became the first native Californian to be elected president."

So it looks like there was a time under Earl Warren and Goodwin Knight in the '40's and '50's when the Republicans had total control but outside of that time period, they haven't. (Actually looks like Reagan had a two year period starting in 1968 where Republicans controlled the Assembly and the Senate was split.)

I pointed out that the last time conservatives had any significant juice at all here, we were battling state bankruptcies.
Okay maybe I shouldn't have used the word "control" but Proposition 13 was a significant piece of legislation that came from California Republicans and it did significant damage to the state's economy.

Of particular interest to members here who are discussing slim inventories I remind them of this item:

Sales disincentives, higher housing costs

[Wikipedia]
Proposition 13 alters the balance of the housing market because it provides disincentives for selling property, in favor of remaining at the current property and modifying or transferring to family members to avoid a new, higher property tax assessment.

Prop 13 was a ballot measure and it passed 62% to 34% so there was definitely support for it from non Republicans (but yes, it was put on the ballot by those with conservative leanings).

Having lived in California previously did you still experience sticker shock moving back?
I had a neighbor here near Dallas that had moved from California and sold a modest home there and did well. He got greedy and over bought a MUCH nicer home in Texas and eventually could not afford what he bought and got evicted.

People in Portland were putting anti-California stickers on For Sale signs in the City because California transplants were driving up the costs so much. It's happened in multiple cities (California transplants driving up the costs) because it's what you described, to people selling in California everywhere else looks so cheap.

My in-laws live in North Texas. When we visit I look at Zillow and see what real estate costs are and it makes you salivate. You can get double to triple the size at half the price.

I watch the home flipper shows and the "good deals" they buy trash heaps for is just crazy. Yeah my home in Southlake is 4,950 SQ feet and on 3/4 acre. I can't imagine what it would cost in SF.

What's interesting about Prop 13 is even today with how much Democrats dominate the state, putting a proposition to eliminate Prop 13 on the ballot is going to fail. (And with Democrats having control of the Governorship and a super majority in the legislature they could, in theory, pass legislation to overturn it and there would be nothing Republicans could do.)

I think there is a free market argument to made why Prop 13 is bad. But it is so ingrained they call it a third rail for a reason.

And yet we see "84721359823123476140913294871837612349 BILLION" pages of crap on this and every other forum about how California is "Commiefornia" and how "liberals destroyed the state" and how Democrats are always in favor of higher taxes.

Like you said, it's now a third rail.

People tend to not like having their own taxes raised (as opposed to having someone else's taxes raised) so I think that plays a role in it.

All I ask is that I get something useful in return for paying them, either for me directly or for the general greater good.
If a state fails to practice good stewardship of my tax money, that's when I get pissed off.
California has done a great job of that sometimes, and then they turn around and act like drunken sailors or outright idiots.
I imagine it is not dissimilar to other states.

Texas has no state income tax and they brag about it all the time but instead they do some pretty awful things with all the other fees they levy on the residents. Our property taxes on a 1972 thousand dollar home in Dallas were almost double what we pay for our 475 thousand dollar home of the same size here in Pico Rivera, CA.

If you decide to live in Minnesota, don't ever be late on your taxes because I guarantee you they will come after you like it's a jihad!

Yep! Texas makes up for its lack of income tax with higher property taxes. In California we have higher income taxes, higher electricity costs etc. It's a choice we make and clearly many people either support it or will tolerate it based on why we do it.

We're solar so our bill is the same every month rain or shine, about 260 bucks.

Florida has something similar to Proposition 13. We call it Homestead. It prevents people from being taxed out of their primary residences. It's a good law.
Appears you would like to misconstrue Prop 13 and demonize it simply because it was a Republican driven proposition.
That is typical for lefties. Are you a typical lefty? I think you are.

Bringing up Reagan reminded me that he signed CEQA into law. Of course at that time it was intended for uses very different than today.

CEQA is of course the NIMBY’s weapon of choice vis a vis housing but here’s another way it’s used courtesy of Scott Weiner (he’s the big favorite to take Pelosi’s seat when she retires).
