People from both parties won't be starting a Progressive Party, whether it's the 3rd, 4th, or 5th.

The Democrats, by global standards, or at least Western standards, are a center right party.
The Republicans are a far right party.
We have no left or center-left party.

The progressive, democratic socialist wing of the Democratic Party might split away to form a Progressive Party,
but no modern Republican,
be it a Nixon Silent Moral Majority Republican,
a Reagan American Exceptionalism Republican,
a Gingrich Contract on America Republican,
a Pat Robertson / Jerry Falwell theocrat Republican,
a Tea Bagger Republican,
totally devolved, sub-human trumpanzee MAGAts,
or even the small band of corporate oligarchs who pull the marionette strings on all of the above---

none of them---
is going to join a modern Progressive Party.

Nor will the Jim Clyburn led black "church lady" Democrats who sabotaged the Bernie Sander nomination.
I hate to tell you Tacky, but except for college educated northern blacks like yourself,
our African American brothers and sisters, on other than with specific black grievance issues
haven't been too vocal on progressive issues either.

because it's the only way to stop Trump.

yes us niggers who won't vote for your plantation candidate are interested more in the content of the character than the color of her skin. and she sure as fuck is lacking in that, no matter how much melanin she has or when she decides to be black or Indian.

republican voters are going on record saying they won't vote for Trump, progressive Dem voters are fighting the aging old guard, and southern, non-college black folk were the backbone of the Civil Rights movement. The potential is there.

The potential is there to beat Trump.
A viable new party is possible but not imminently probable from my perspective.

One thing that multiple parties would do --real, viable parties that get significant votes--
is pretty much do away with presidential elections
as they wouldn't ever result in anybody gaining the required majority.

All presidential elections would be determined by the House of Representatives.
If it's the newly seated House, I'd be fine with it. Just like choosing a Prime Minister.

If it's the lame duck House, it could be a catastrophe.
You could be voting a party out, but before they leave,
they'll pick a president that won't work with the party you're voting in.

If you vote for personalities rather than policy issues,
you're not politically sophisticated enough to be voting at all.

The poster child for the policies doesn't matter.
The policies matter, and African Americans who don't vote for Harris,
even if it's only because that's the only way to stop Trump,
are voting for the return of Jim Crow.

Sounds like Uncle Tommin' to me.
