Should the Catholic Church who stayed silent largely through the Holocaust be held even partially responsible for mass murder of the Holocaust?

Or do they get a pass because of "reasons"?

How about Russia BEFORE The Bolsheviks? The repeated Pogroms in the Pale of Settlement and elsewhere were clearly done NOT by an atheist regime but one married to the Orthodox church. Seems a bit "murdery" in explicit service to religion.

On the scale of moral depravity, the five most lethal forces in human history are communism, Nazism, capitalism, fascism, imperialism/colonialism.

Religion isn't even in the top five. It may not even be in the top ten, because most human conflict is focused around resources, politics, land, economics.

I agree that most human conflict is based around resources, politics and land. Certainly the process of COLONIALISM had a BIG heaping helping of Christian (primarily Catholic) forces FORCING their religion onto native peoples resulting in their deaths, enslavement, and exploitation....specifically in the name of the faith.

Naziism was initially sold to the German people by Hitler appealing to his "Catholic faith" (obviously that was probably quite fake of him, but it was a useful tool for him since it tapped into a VERY long history of European antisemitism and countless pogroms run in the name of the Church. Even Martin Luther was a vile antisemite who expressed EXTREME levels of hatred for the Jews.)

And of course the Southern Plantation slave owners OFTEN relied on Biblical justification for slavery (which, I think you will admit, was effectively forced labor-based murder in the long run). The cool thing is that just as many ANTI-Slavery people also relied on the Bible. So it may be a wash?

But, I'm curious how you justify the claim overall about the relative number of people killed by religion? Per your own post we are no longer limited to the last 100 years for Christianity alone.

How on earth can you know how many people were killed in HUMAN HISTORY over the cause of religion?
