Civil War museum gets rid of Confederate flag on new logo

Are you serious? Does the Holocaust museum make Jews want to recreate the Holocaust? I don't think you've thought this one through. We study history in order to avoid repeating our mistakes.

I'll bet it makes at least a couple want some reprisals.

A Civil War Museum that did not include a Confederate flag would be doing a incomplete job of portraying the war and the two sides.

Again, no objections from me to the flag being in a museum where it can be placed in its proper context.

But that's not what anyone's arguing about.

The Confederate flag is often worn by many young guys as a fashion item by people who have little interest in history, slavery, or anything it represents. What something means to you has nothing to do with what it might mean to other people.

So by doing so, they are quite figuratively erasing the history of that flag in order to suit their own narrow insecurities.

So they are appropriating the flag and erasing its history, so they can feel fashionable?

FUCK THAT. I don't fucking buy that disingenuous shit for a second, and it's laughable that you do.

People who wave that stupid thing know exactly what they're doing.

Welcome to Gaslit Nation.

The peace sign for many represented opposition to the Vietnam War, others saw those people as traitors, today it has just become a fashion item. Many young black men wearing a Malcolm X t-shirt did not even know who he was.

Right, but the peace symbol wasn't created in order to intimidate anyone, nor has it been used to do that because it is...a peace symbol.

The PC police strike again.

Egads! Now Flash will forever forget who lost the Civil War because a museum took that dumb flag off its logo.

Who knows what they were really fighting about anyway? I mean, other than what they literally said in the Articles of Secession.

Your actions are Nazi like when you want to tell others what they display, say, etc.

You're the one telling me that the people who wave that dumb thing are erasing history to suit their fragile insecurities.

I am not defending monuments and flags, I am defending the freedom to display them against those who would use Nazi like methods to control society.

Take me through how removing monuments and flags to traitors who lost a war and killed Americans "controls society"?

What am I missing? What history am I missing from those flags? You're trying to say that the history of that flag should be erased in order to satisfy insecure trash.

So wouldn't you be the one seeking to control society by defending the erasing of history of that dumb flag?

Context is entirely dependent on the viewer though. One cannot control how another interprets something.

To an extent. However, it's reasonable to assume that, in the context of a museum, the items are there for historical study.

No one assumes that the Holocaust Museum in DC, for example, is there to advocate for another Holocaust.

I have no strong feelings for or against any flag or monument--they are just physical.

No, they are symbols and those symbols represent something. As Wolverine said in this thread, the flag represents slavery. Pretending it represents something else totally erases the history of that flag.

The supreme court doesn't care what your uneducated opinion is.
Americans have the right to protest, the government, the flag represents the government.
Burning a Rainbow Flag, because you hate gays,is a hate crime!

Actually, that depends on the context. You can burn a rainbow flag without being charged with a hate crime if you follow whatever the local laws are for burning items and if you do it in a public space rather than somewhere else like a gay person's yard.

Technically, you can burn a cross in a public space with the right permits. Granted, getting permission from a local government to do that is very unlikely for obvious reasons.

Hate crimes are easier to determine when the action being done is on someone's private property or in other expressions of a personal threat.

It's why the KKK is still allowed to have rallies, but they aren't allowed to burn a cross in someone's yard.

I'll bet it makes at least a couple want some reprisals.

Do you mean Jewish people wanting reprisals against Germans, or do you mean neo-Nazis wanting to seize power?

If it's the former, there have already been several reparations made. If it's the latter, well, there will always be crazy people.

I find it wholly unsurprising that the people who accuse us of wanting to erase history by tearing down Confederate flags and monuments have absolutely no problem erasing the history of the flag and monuments by disingenuously appropriating it to mean something else.

Isn't that always the case with Conservatives and BoThSiDeRiStS? Accuse others of doing the thing you're either deliberately or unknowingly doing yourself...

No, they are symbols and those symbols represent something. As Wolverine said in this thread, the flag represents slavery. Pretending it represents something else totally erases the history of that flag.

And, since slavery was the single most important cause of the war a flag representing slavery would seem essential in a museum. The history of the flag and its meaning is being destroyed by banning it.

What am I missing? What history am I missing from those flags? You're trying to say that the history of that flag should be erased in order to satisfy insecure trash.

So wouldn't you be the one seeking to control society by defending the erasing of history of that dumb flag?

You are the one who wants to erase the history of slavery by banning a flag that represents that slavery.

You want to destroy the freedom of museums to display such symbols.

Again, should the swastika be banned in WWII or Holocaust museums? Or, the entire U. S.?
