Civil War museum gets rid of Confederate flag on new logo

Obviously museums should cover history. German ones, for instance, should deal with the horrors of the Hitler years - but we would not expect them to use the swastika flag as a logo, would we? Clearly some of the inhabitants of the old Confederacy feel some sort of historical sympathy for their dead ancestors, as we must remember - whereas others, like the Jews now living in Germany, remember with horror what was done to theirs under the monstrous evil of slavery. What's needed is understanding and firmness. Family feeling must not be allowed to degenerate into racism, not ever.

Why would you want to teach history without everything related to it being a part of the lesson?

Strange how you snowflakes get so butthurt over inanimate objects.

You are the one who wants to erase the history of slavery by banning a flag that represents that slavery.

Who said I want to erase the history of slavery?

As I've asked countless times here, Flash, what does the Confederate Flag teach that the Articles of Secession do not?

You want to destroy the freedom of museums to display such symbols.

Not at all! As I've said, the flag should be in a museum, placed in its proper context; as a tool used by white supremacists and BoThSiDeRiStS to intimidate the descendants of the people whose freedom was won in that war.

You're so fucking lazy.

Again, should the swastika be banned in WWII or Holocaust museums? Or, the entire U. S.?

Of course not. As I said many, many times that you've ignored because you're a little bitch, it's fine to place that shit in its proper context. What's not OK is doing so outside that context for the sake of the feelings of fragile losers.

And, since slavery was the single most important cause of the war a flag representing slavery would seem essential in a museum. The history of the flag and its meaning is being destroyed by banning it.

Again, I never said it shouldn't be in the museum, placed in its proper context.

The history of the flag is erased when you start saying it represents "heritage" or "Southern pride" or "rednecks", like you've argued on this thread, you human stain.

I understand, but LV426 wants it banned everywhere--monuments destroyed,

No I don't! I've repeatedly said the flag should exist in a museum in its proper context. That context as a tool used by white supremacists, conservatives and BoThSiDeRiStS to intimidate the descendants of the people whose freedom was won in that war.

But all the monuments and flags outside that? Yeah, tear 'em down and burn 'em to ashes.

All Flash does is bullshit because he can't stand that I'm right.

Then we agree. The Confederate flag belongs in a museum as part of the history of our country and slavery.

Whether someone chooses to display that flag outside of that museum is their business and part of the freedom we possess.

What does the Union flag represent?

Bothsiderists were both for and against slavery?

You are obviously not right since we are still free to display any flag and any symbol we choose. It is a scary thought if we ever start prohibiting anything because fascists like you object.

Right, and that's it. Posting it anywhere else erases the history of that flag and strips it of context.

hether someone chooses to display that flag outside of that museum is their business and part of the freedom we possess.

Really? It wouldn't be "erasing history" to wave that dumb thing outside of the museum context?

You can't have it BoTh WaYs, Flash. You can't say that tearing down that shit in public is erasing history, but erecting it outside of its proper context isn't.

You're talking out of BoTh SiDeS of your mouth.

What does the Union flag represent?

The winning side.

Bothsiderists were both for and against slavery?

BoThSiDeRiStS are for the erasing of history by letting that flag fly without its proper context.

So you can't argue simultaneously that tearing that flag down is erasing history, but erecting it outside of its proper context isn't.

Surely you understand that, RIGHT?

Flying that dumb flag outside of the proper context is erasing the history you're so adamant that flag represents.

Your argument is masturbatory and circular.

What does the Union flag represent?

From June 14, 1777 when the Continental Congress passed the first flag act until the 13th amendment abolished slavery in UNION states such as Delaware and Kentucky, the Union flag represented a far greater level of slavery than the Confederate states ever did.

Flying that dumb flag outside of the proper context is erasing the history you're so adamant that flag represents.

If you claim it's so bad, why aren't you going around and personally taking them away from those flying them?

Let's go through Flash's argument one step at a time:

1. The flag represents slavery
2. The flag should be in a museum in its proper context of intimidation post-Civil War
3. Tearing the flag down outside that context is erasing history, but...
4. ..letting that dumb thing fly without its proper context isn't.

So Flash, in his own BoThSiDeRiSt way, is supporting the continued intimidation within which the flag's context exists, by erasing the history of the flag and playing dumb about it.

Flash is basically arguing that Confederate fanboys should be allowed to fly the dumb flag, whose purpose is to intimidate people and which represents white supremacy and slavery, and erase the history of that flag...because free speech? Huh? Intimidation is not free speech.

No one can cause you to be intimidated. That is your choice.

It doesn't matter what the effect is of displaying anything outside a museum. We are free to make that decision unless the fascist PC police try to take it away.

If the Union flag simply represents the winning side that means the Confederate flag simply represents the losing side.

At least you didn't try to tell us it represented fighting to end slavery.

From the time the first U.S. flag was made until the last slave from a Union state was released, the Union flag, along the lines of this discussion, represented slavery.

Of course it matters! You said yourself that tearing them down "erases history", but you won't go so far as to say it doesn't erase history to erect them outside of the museum context.

Face it, Flash, your argument eats itself and you're trying to have it both ways here.

We are free to make that decision unless the fascist PC police try to take it away.

Are you high? We ban public displays of shit all the time. Like naked breasts, for instance.

If the Union flag simply represents the winning side that means the Confederate flag simply represents the losing side.

Well, I mean it kinda does that too, doesn't it?

So why should losers get participation trophies?

At least you didn't try to tell us it represented fighting to end slavery.

Well, the Union Flag isn't up for debate here, but your whatabout to it is noted.

So Flash, your argument boils down to this: Tearing down confederate flags outside of the museum context is erasing history, but erecting those flags outside museum context isn't.

Are you intimidated by any flag or symbol? I'm not and neither are most Americans. A 2015 Roper poll found 57% of American adults said the Confederate flag represented Southern pride, 33% said it represented racism, and 5% said both. A majority disagree with you. "In 2011, a Pew poll found that just 9% of the country had a positive reaction to seeing the Confederate flag, while 30% had a negative one, and 58% had neither."

But more importantly, the Bill of Rights still protects those freedoms. So you are spinning your wheels.

Yes, I am intimidated by that stupid thing because I know what it represents. They all know what it represents too, which is why they erected all those monuments and put it on their state flags during Reconstruction and Jim Crow. They literally said so themselves at all their dedication ceremonies. It's all on the record.

You are ignorant of history, Flash.

But more importantly, the Bill of Rights still protects those freedoms. So you are spinning your wheels.

The bill of rights doesn't protect intimidation, and limits to free speech happen all the fucking time.

It's why people are arrested for flashing in public.

Jesus fucking Christ, Flash, just say you have no problem erasing history and be done with it.

By supporting the dumb waving about of that stupid flag, you are also saying you support the very erasing of history you accuse others of doing. Flash, you are the fascist.
