Civil War museum gets rid of Confederate flag on new logo

But you said tearing them down or burning them erases history.
that isn't what I said at all. I said liberals who want to do this, or are doing it, are out trying to erase history

I'm just trying to figure out what history is erased.
i'm imagining that democrats are trying to erase the history of their support of slavery

One of your fellow buttheads said that the flag represented slavery. So...is that the only thing that represents slavery to come from the Civil War?

anyone who thinks that the confederate flag represents slavery is indeed a butthead. the confederate flag was representing the newly independent southern states who seceded.

Ummm...what authority do you think they were fighting to preserve, other than the authority to end slavery?

lincoln started the war with the intent to force the union to stay the union. it had zero to do with slavery until lincoln felt he needed to use anti slavery to garner more support for the union

that isn't what I said at all. I said liberals who want to do this, or are doing it, are out trying to erase history

OMFG.

Do you not recognize the cognitive dissonance?

Me: But you said tearing them down or burning them erases history.
You: that isn't what I said at all. I said liberals who want to do this, or are doing it, are out trying to erase history

Do you have brain damage or something?

To paraphrase: "I didn't say tearing them down would erase history, I said that tearing them down will erase history."

Oy vey.

'm imagining that democrats are trying to erase the history of their support of slavery

Could it be that, or could it be that the flag represents slavery and we want to remove it from the public space because it doesn't denigrate slavery in any way, shape, or form?

lincoln started the war with the intent to force the union to stay the union. it had zero to do with slavery until lincoln felt he needed to use anti slavery to garner more support for the union

Why did they not want to stay in the union? Because of slavery.

You see how it keeps coming back to slavery? You want to be content with leaving things at half the truth. Pretty obvious why.

But how does it "teach history"? What is the lesson learned from the Confederate Flag? That's what I'm getting at.

We don't prominently display the Nazi flag in public spaces.

We don't display the Nazi flag but it is shown in museums. Do you think the complete absence of swastikas would be as effective in portraying the Nazi regime?

Symbols, uniforms, weapons, pictures are all parts of museum displays and help convey an overall atmosphere and understanding of the events. Pictures of dead or malnourished Jews is not pleasant or necessary but helps people understand the history.

Also, wanting to ban something because we don't like its symbolic or historical significance is worse than its display (and reminiscent of Nazis).

What would Bo and Luke Duke put on the roof of their Charger?

Model planes from Europe don't include swastika decals.

The Confederate Flag is a virtue signal for racists. You know how I know that? Because racists in Europe fly it.
WTF do I care about a bunch of Euros who have no understanding of the Civil war.
If we left it up to you asshats, you'd tear down the damn monuments at battle sites.

The China cultural revolution had nothing on you idjits -you want the same whitewashing

We don't display the Nazi flag but it is shown in museums.

Right, but Confederate Flags are displayed in public places, and had been displayed on public lands. Same with the monuments. How do monuments that glorify those traitors teach history? What lesson do they teach?

Do you think the complete absence of swastikas would be as effective in portraying the Nazi regime

Right, but all that is in a museum. They're not on display in public places. The people who fought under that flag don't have memorials and monuments to them. Go to Germany, you won't see a single Nazi flag being waved about, but every German knows who the Nazis were and are.

You're veering into sophistry now. It's a poor, lazy look on you.

And why did they secede? Because of slavery.

This is a circular, masturbatory discussion.
slavery was the root -no disagreement- although there were other lessor factors as well ( like why Lee took up the Virginia cause).

but they LOST and slave holding was ABOLISHED and DISCREDITED -so why can't we look at our history
like it truly was? That's not "glorification" it's simply accuracy

Symbols, uniforms, weapons, pictures are all parts of museum displays and help convey an overall atmosphere and understanding of the events. Pictures of dead or malnourished Jews is not pleasant or necessary but helps people understand the history.

Right, but all that is in a museum. We are talking about public displays of this shit.

You want to know what that flag really teaches? That depressed white trash people couldn't get over losing, but felt the need to intimidate the people whose very rights they fought to deny.

That's not valuable history, outside of that context.

So if you want to include that dumb flag in a museum, it should come with the description that it was used as a tool to intimidate newly freed slaves and their descendants.

But I doubt that is the history anyone takes from that dumb thing, and I believe you feel the same way.

Also, wanting to ban something because we don't like its symbolic or historical significance is worse than its display (and reminiscent of Nazis).

Really? I think that's a perfect reason to ban it.

The lesson learned from 160 years of that flag is that it's a tool used by depressed whites to intimidate the descendants of the people whose rights that flag sought to deny.

Do you think it teaches anything else? If so, what?

A Civil War museum in Frederick, Maryland, that used to have a Confederate flag on its logo ditched the controversial symbol in a new logo that was unveiled Wednesday.

The two affiliated museums, which now also have the new logo, include the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office in D.C. and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum in Keedysville, Maryland.

That's interesting. Is it business, sensitivity or sanitizing or effrontery to the pride of whites?

hat would Bo and Luke Duke put on the roof of their Charger?

How about an American flag? Then they can call the car The General Sherman.

Or how about nothing at all?

Look! A charger without a Confederate Flag on it! OMG, what will anyone do!?!?!?!?!?!?! Now Flash will forget who lost the Civil War because the General Lee no longer has the racist flag on it.

WTF do I care about a bunch of Euros who have no understanding of the Civil war.

So...to Europeans, the Civil War represents slavery and the Confederate Flag represents racism.

How on earth could they have gotten that idea?

If we left it up to you asshats, you'd tear down the damn monuments at battle sites.

Just the ones to the traitors.

Traitors don't get to rest in peace.

he China cultural revolution had nothing on you idjits -you want the same whitewashing

If the Confederate Flag was banned, Dukkha will not be able to remember who lost the Civil War.
