HASTINGS WAS ACQUITTED FOLKS

In 1981, a federal grand jury indicted Judge Alcee L. Hastings, appointed to the federal district court in 1979, along with his friend William A. Borders, a Washington, D.C. lawyer. Hastings was charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice for soliciting a $150,000 bribe in return for reducing the sentences of two mob-connected felons convicted in Hastings’ court. A year after Borders was convicted of conspiracy, the result of an FBI sting effort, Hastings's case came before the criminal court. Despite Borders’ conviction, and the fact that Hastings had indeed reduced the sentences of the two felons, he was acquitted in a criminal court in 1983 and returned to his judicial post.

Subsequently, suspicions arose that Hastings had lied and falsified evidence during the trial in order to obtain an acquittal. A special committee of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals began a new probe into the Hastings case. The resulting three-year investigation ended with the panel concluding that Hastings did indeed commit perjury, tamper with evidence, and conspire to gain financially by accepting bribes. The panel recommended further action to the U.S. Judicial Conference, which, in turn, informed the House of Representatives on March 17, 1987, that Judge Alcee Hastings should be impeached and removed from office.

When I was a decision maker at the last job I held (I was a VP), I was prohibited from accepting anything of value over $25 from any vendor. That meant that a vendor couldn't take me to lunch, or out for drinks, or anything that might appear that I was in debt to that vendor in some way. I think maybe a SCOTUS justice should be held to at least that high a standard. I guess Republicans disagree with me. That speaks volumes.

He was acquitted of the charges you asshole

A pack of republicans punished him anyway

Remember those facts you asshole while you watch trump be convicted

Following a 1983 criminal trial, Hastings was acquitted; however, he was impeached for bribery and perjury by the United States House of Representatives in 1988 and was convicted by the United States Senate in his impeachment trial on October 20, 1989

A pack of republicans

Reading problems?

The outcome of the proceeding -- eight years after Hastings was first accused and five years after a jury found him not guilty -- was unclear until nearly the end of the first roll call. Both the chairman, Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), and the vice chairman, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), of the 12-member panel that heard the evidence in the case voted for acquittal. The 12 members of the panel voted 7 to 5 for conviction.

He was found not guilty of bribery in criminal court.

He was impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate and removed from his judicial position.

Yes

And most who voted voted before he was found innocent by the Justice system

One is political

One is as fair as America offers

Exactly

In fact decent people don’t want their friends to constantly pay for everything

No matter how rich their friends are

It wouldn't feel right to have some guy, even a friend, pay for your vacations year after year.

That's something one only does for a mistress, assuming they have one.

That raises the question of is a flight to Indonesia on a private jet and 10 days on a luxury yacht a lavish gift or just accepting hospitality?

Admittedly on a much, much smaller scale, although it's the same principle, I,
for most of my life,
owned a big beach house to which I invited many friends who did not own beach houses.
I paid for the steaks. I paid for the wine and liquor.

Did my friends do anything wrong accepting my invitations?

What if some of them had higher management jobs at work
and were people to whom I, as a union rep, may have presented grievances from time to time?

What is some of them invited me?

People sell out for money, not hospitality.
Hospitality is merely being civilized to the extent that one can.
