Actually it has never been explained. "Oh my staff didn't leak the letter" does not comport with "oh the press learned about the letter and investigated on their own." The press wouldn't have known about it if her staff hadn't leaked its existence.
On Kavanaughs part: Actual answers rather than evasions.
That is why the FBI was instructed not to interview Ford.
If they did that, they would have had to interview Kavanaugh.
And Kavanaugh would never have gotten away with the evasion nonsense he use on the committee.
