Georgia mom charged after [11 y.o.] son walks alone less than a mile from home

My father has a PhD and earned tenure as a Professor and mother has a MBA. They both worked when I was young in the '80's in Oakland (no nanny's). We didn't live in the flatlands but Oakland, CA is never going to win any 'safest City' awards. Yet I rode my bike a couple of miles to school each day at the same age as this kid. I took the bus by myself to go buy baseball cards a couple of miles away at that age.

So it's funny to think my (educated) folks are southern hicks for allowing me to do so.

I have an 8 year old daughter. San Francisco is an urban area so your instinct is to always have eyes on her. But at the same time, she needs to learn street smarts. I both want to shelter her to a certain extent because she's 'my baby' but I'm also not doing her any favors if I overdo it.

I guess that makes a southern hick as well but that's not going to make me change.
I might also add that just being a “southern hick” does not necessarily make one “dumb and stupid” either. Put me along side a lot of southern hicks and you wouldn’t know the difference…and they’re not dumb or stupid.

I hope the lady wins her case because unless there is a “rest of the story” this is a very stupid charge.

Georgia is a Red State.
All that is red is not right…as in correct. Also, it was blue just a few years ago. Wrong is wrong, no matter the color. Like I said in another post, unless there is a “rest of the story” to this I hope the woman wins.

The Head of School where my daughter goes referenced Jonathan Haidt's book Anxious Generation about social media and its (negative) effects and it's drawn a lot of feedback from parents. But another part of his book is the Free Play movement. Not to beat a dead horse here but yeah, supporting free play now make's one a hick? I think he's going to get a lot of push back on that.

There is a correlation between the mental health issues of kids and the lack of free play. Hopefully this gets more attention and it's not shut down because it's viewed as being hickish.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's in NYC, at 11 we rode the subways into Manhattan went to coney island and in the summer went to the beach daily (a few blocks away),rode our bikes on the 11 mile boardwalk , went fishing in the bay ,walked or took a bus a mille to the movies, all unaccompanied ,but that was then not the world it is today.
why were your parents white trash?

Some people can only view the world through politics (red and blue). To each his own but it can be very limiting. The whole discussion over Free Play isn't a right or left thing. How parents, gov't etc. react to Free Play isn't a right or left thing. Arguing over that misses what's happening here.

Georgia mom charged after son walks alone less than a mile from home

A mom in Georgia is facing possible jail time after her 10-year-old (almost 11) son was found walking alone to town, less than a mile from the family’s home.

Brittany Patterson, 41, was arrested on suspicion of reckless conduct on Oct. 30 over her son's unsupervised walk, according to the Fannin County Sheriff's Office.

Patterson had taken another son to a doctor’s appointment when she left her son Soren, now 11, alone at their home in the rural town of Mineral Bluff, NBC News reported. After someone reported Soren’s wandering, deputies located him and drove him home.

"It's not a super dangerous or even dangerous-at-all stretch of road," Patterson told the outlet. "I wasn't terrified for him or scared for his safety."

Still, deputies returned to the home later and placed Patterson under arrest.

In bodycam footage obtained by ABC News, deputies could be heard telling Patterson she is under arrest for reckless endangerment.

"And how was I recklessly endangering my child?" Patterson asked.

Another deputy responded, "We're not talking about it," before handcuffing the mom.

Patterson and her lawyer said that authorities offered to drop the charge if she signed a safety plan that included using a GPS tracker on her son’s phone.

The mom said she is refusing to sign the plan and will fight the charge.

"I just felt like I couldn't sign that and that in doing so, would be agreeing that there was something unsafe about my home or something unsafe about my parental decisions and I just don't believe that," the mom told ABC News....

Who thinks this is governmental overreach? And how many parents do you think they arrested the NEXT DAY for Trick or Treating? This kid was less than a mile from home. When you were a kid did you ever walk unaccompanied less than a mile from home at age 10-11? I used to walk that far to school almost everyday.
My kids sometimes walked, sometimes rode their bikes to school at 8. Exactly 1 mile from my house, no issues.

But I live in Palm Beach County, a much more liberal area than that stretch of Georgia.

So you're a hick?

I agree it’s not a left or right issue. I raised my kids with a lot of freedom and unsupported time. I think it’s very good for them. My 17 year old and his 17 year old friends just got back from a boat trip to the Bahamas by themselves, they cleared customs themselves and caught a 50 lbs Wahoo. Crossed the Gulf Stream twice without an adult.

Some friends think I’m crazy. My son is very proud of himself.

My 16 year old daughter and her 16 year old friend drove themselves to camp last summer in North Carolina. 12 hour drive. The cell phone makes this much safer than it was in the 1980’s.

Also the crime rate is much lower.

I suppose like most things there can be extremes and nuance needs to be involved. But I share your perspective. You do hear stories of kids basically having to be an adult starting at an early age. I would never go that far. But I differ strongly from my wife and her "we need to have eyes on her at all times" perspective.

Guno argued the opposite (it was safe in the '50's thus kids come do things like ride the subway and play outside without supervision and it's different today, thus not safe).

Crime rates can be deceptive. Take BART in the Bay Area. Many adults don't feel safe riding on it let alone a 10 year old kid by themselves. You go around SF and you see the number of homeless and drugged out people and even I, who supports letting my 8 year old daughter walk to the park, have pause.

So simply saying crime rates are down doesn't necessarily mean things are always safe.

People called me crazy, incidentally Trumppers, for riding the NYC Subway last year with my daughter.

They also freak about my family traveling in Mexico.

My sister had a boat in southern Baja California, in Mexico. She often did a 6 hour drive alone in Mexico and people were shocked she wasn’t murdered. Never had an issue.

This isn't the 50's or 60's
I don't know if you remember this (I didn't) but in 2008 there was a Mom who let her 9 year old son ride the Subway alone in NYC (and then she wrote about it). It made national news and she got voted some 'Worst Mom' award.

I don't remember the exact years but there was a period of time when NYC was considered the safest big City in America. Of course being a safe City doesn't mean there are not risk for kids. You said you rode the Subway alone as a kid. Do you still think even in the 'safest big City in America' that it was unsafe a kid in NYC to ride the subway alone in 2008?

There's a VERY big difference between riding the subway with your kid and having your kid ride the Subway alone. The whole debate about Free Play isn't parents doing things with their kids. My wife is kind of a helicopter parents (doesn't want my 8 year old daughter walking three blocks to the park alone) but she doesn't care that I walk her.

I understand, it was an incidental story, but I think Americans are more afraid in general these days.

If they watch too much television (certain channels) they believe NYC and Chicago and Mexico are very dangerous. (They likely can be, but usually only if you are involved in drug dealing or other specific activities.)
