Georgia mom charged after [11 y.o.] son walks alone less than a mile from home

it totally is Dem hatred..

Dems hate how their cities suck, so they pretend everywhere sucks as bad, when it doesn't.
MAGA pretends the cities suck. They don’t and aren’t anymore dangerous than 20 years ago.

What area do Dems believe suck?

I understand, it was an incidental story, but I think Americans are more afraid in general these days.

If they watch too much television (certain channels) they believe NYC and Chicago and Mexico are very dangerous. (They likely can be, but usually only if you are involved in drug dealing or other specific activities.)
Look up the finances of BART in the Bay Area. It's in very real trouble. A big reason for that is people don't feel safe riding it. It has little to do with what television says, it's from people's experiences on it. And thus ridership is way down.

Having kids play free or ride their bike a mile in a leafy suburb can be a very different experience than an urban area. I'm not without concern my 8 year old having mentally ill/drugged out people approach her or start screaming at her while she's alone. I don't want to shelter her but I also don't see that as beneficial to growth.

I know nothing about BART, ridden it a few times, maybe it’s dangerous. I know the horror people expressed about my daughter and I riding the NY Subway was way unjustified.

the cities. I told you.

they know they suck, so they pretend everywhere sucks.

sour grapes.

stop being intentionally moronic.

It used to be very safe and efficient. A model for other cities. Not anymore.

All that is red is not right…as in correct. Also, it was blue just a few years ago. Wrong is wrong, no matter the color. Like I said in another post, unless there is a “rest of the story” to this I hope the woman wins.
Blue by 11,000 votes. :)

Agreed wrong is wrong regardless of other factors. Agreed on the woman winning her case and seeing justice done given there are no other factors.

So illegals let their kids walk unaccompanied across countries then the Biden/Harris administration turns the kids over to the parents. But Americans can't let their kid walk a few thousand feet from their homes. Something is very wrong.

LR, being a teacher (although I know of older students) have you followed this debate over free play at all? If yes, any thoughts?

I ran your opinions on allowing an 8 year old girl to walk a couple blocks to a park to play by herself. Let's just say it's 2 and 0 in your wife's favor.

Oh my wife reminded me she used to tell my son "I'm going to get you to 18 alive and then you are on your own." She kept that promise. BTW he is in total agreement with her parenting today and is an "alpha male" who is on the North Tarrant county SWAT team. Runs into houses with an AR 15 to drag dangerous criminals out. So her watchful eye did not hurt him much.

That area of GA, next door to MGT’s district is as red as it gets.

Haha! Let me ask, did you preference what you told them that this was S.F.? Or did they think is was some regular suburb?

I have a sister in law with two sons that work at Google (really sharp kids) but she would not even let them ride BART alone while in high school. She subscribed to the “keep them alive to 18” to the extreme.

So I get the pushback on an 8 year girl walking alone in S.F. I respect that. I’m still a believer in that data that says mental health issues are related to helicopter parenting and lack of free play.

While there has to be a certain amount of free play for kids...oportunities for them to make decisions for themselves and learn to watch out for themselves, I am probably going to side with your wife on the going to the park thing. We live in scary times.

I remember when I was a kid we would venture into the woods and swim in the creeks around here on a regular basis. I would either walk or ride my bike and be a few miles from home on any given day. I couldn't imagine allowing a kid of 9 or so to go the places I went and do the things that I did.

Even in our small community we have people who have moved in, live at the RV park (what's the deal with all these RV parks showing up in every small community and town anyway?) ...we don't know who they are. If the law gets called to come here it is usually dealing with something stemming from that place.

All of that said, though, we still have to find places and opportunities where chances for harm are minimized and turn our kids loose to make decisions for themselves. I am just going to monitor them a bit more closely than I was monitored.

Here's another potential variable. I was with family this past weekend and by today's standards they had me relatively young, 24 & 25 years old. They said they didn't know what they were doing and because they couldn't always afford babysitters they would just bring me with them (even if it was out to bars).

Today, in many places at least, people tend to wait a little longer to have kids which (in theory) means they are a little more mature and in better financial condition. And being older can lead to more helicopter parenting (as I see it).

Jarod brought up crime rates being down but you and Guno said 'times are different'. The 'times are different' mindset can't be encapsulated in crime rate numbers.

So I wrestle with not disagreeing with the 'times are different' mentality but also knowing that helicopter parenting is contributing to the mental health issues we face in kids and not properly preparing them for the future.
