Japan typhoon Hagibis: Ten flooded bullet trains scrapped

Ten Japanese bullet trains partially submerged by floodwater from Typhoon Hagibis last month are to be scrapped.

Some components could still be used but the loss to the book value of the trains could be between $110m and $135m (£85m-£104m), Japanese media said.

The Hokuriku-Shinkansen line trains were parked in a yard in Nagano city.

Typhoon Hagibis struck with winds of 225km/h (140mph) on the weekend of 12-13 October, killing about 90 people and displacing thousands with flooding.

It was the country's worst storm in decades.

The images of the parked trains with floodwater lapping at them became symbolic of the extent of the damage.

The point of this post in this particular thread is to emphasize that the major flooding, experienced in many locations as a result of sea-level rise and huge rain-storms , is adding pollutants to the seas which, in turn, cause further environmental damage and accelerated climatic degradation. Never mind how much the fucking trains cost- we all have a duty to ensure that the filth they generate, in manufacture and operation is contained.
Best not to produce them in the first place. Our lives must change. Identify an eco-criminal today.

UK railways cannot cope with climate crisis, says rail boss


Calling for more to be done on decarbonising rail, he told the Railway Industry Association conference in London: “We have a vested interest in making this work.”

In July, hot weather forced trains to run at maximum speeds of 20mph (32km/h) on parts of the railway network, resulting in many services being cancelled and rail operators telling people not to travel.

Britain’s railways can no longer cope with the effects of the climate crisis, a senior rail executive has warned.

Extreme weather events including heatwaves, storms and flooding have damaged infrastructure and halted thousands of services across the UK this year.

Alex Hynes, the managing director of Scotland’s railway, said more investment would be needed to future-proof the railway against rising temperatures.

“The railway in this country can no longer cope because of climate change,” he said.

Australia bushfires: Record number of emergencies in New South Wales

Australian authorities say an "unprecedented" number of emergency-level bushfires are threatening the state of New South Wales (NSW).

More than 80 blazes were raging across the state on Friday.

Gusty winds and up to 35C heat have exacerbated the fires, many of which are in drought-affected areas.

There are reports of people trapped in their homes in several places, with crew unable to reach them due to the strength of the fires.

Authorities have deployed more than 1,000 firefighters and 70 aircraft to save "as many people as possible", Mr Fitzsimmons said.
