Jena 6

I am not so sure. It has an ugly history with it, so do many other places.

Jim Crow laws were based on northern laws, pre civil war, concerning transportation and accomadation. Jim Crow as used first referred to the segregated cars of the North.

“All marriages between a white person and a negro, or between a white person and a person of negro descent to the fourth generation inclusive, are hereby forever prohibited,”

"Any Negro man and white woman, or any white man and Negro woman, who are not married to each other, who shall habitually live in and occupy in the nighttime the same room shall each be punished by imprisonment not exceeding twelve (12) months, or by fine not exceeding five hundred ($500.00) dollars."

"The schools for white children and the schools for Negro children shall be conducted separately."--Florida.

“Separate free schools shall be established for the education of children of African descent; and it shall be unlawful for any colored child to attend any white school, or any white child to attend a colored school,”

"Any person...who shall be guilty of printing, publishing or circulating printed, typewritten or written matter urging or presenting for public acceptance or general information, arguments or suggestions in favor of social equality or of intermarriage between whites and Negroes, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to fine or not exceeding five hundred (500.00) dollars or imprisonment not exceeding six (6) months or both.--Mississippi.

“Any person . . . who shall rent any part of any such building to a negro person or a negro family when such building is already in whole or in part in occupancy by a white person or white family shall be guilty of a misdemeanor,”--Louisiana.

"All passenger stations in this state operated by any motor transportation company shall have separate waiting rooms or space and separate ticket windows for the white and colored races." --Alabama

Various laws from 1884 to 1947 prohibited marriage or sexual relations between whites and blacks or mulattoes, providing for specific fines and imprisonment of up to three years.

Various laws from 1891 to 1959 segregated rail travel, streetcars, buses, all public carriers, race tracks, gaming establishments, polling places, washrooms in mines, tuberculosis hospitals, public schools and teachers' colleges.
A poll tax was first imposed in the 1890s--Arkansas

"All persons licensed to conduct a restaurant, shall serve either white people exclusively or colored people exclusively and shall not sell to the two races within the same room or serve the two races anywhere under the same license."

"It shall be unlawful for any amateur white baseball team to play baseball on any vacant lot or baseball diamond within two blocks of a playground devoted to the Negro race, and it shall be unlawful for any amateur colored baseball team to play baseball in any vacant lot or baseball diamond within two blocks of any playground devoted to the white race."--Georgia

"Any person who shall rent any part of any such building to a Negro person or a Negro family when such building is already in whole or in part in occupancy by a white person or white family, or vice versa when the building is in occupancy by a Negro person or Negro family, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine of not less than twenty-five ($25.00) nor more than one hundred ($100.00) dollars or be imprisoned not less than 10, or more than 60 days, or both such fine and imprisonment in the discretion of the court."--Louisiana

"Books shall not be interchangeable between the white and colored schools, but shall continue to be used by the race first using them. "

"The state librarian is directed to fit up and maintain a separate place for the use of the colored people who may come to the library for the purpose of reading books or periodicals."--North Carolina

Twenty-seven Jim Crow laws were passed in the Lone Star state from 1866 to 1958. Some examples include:

1925: Required racially segregated schools.
1950: Separate facilities required for white and black citizens in state parks
1953: Public carriers to be segregated
1958: No child compelled to attend schools that are racially mixed. No desegregation unless approved by election. Governor may close schools where troops used on federal authority.--Texas

"Every person...operating...any public hall, theater, opera house, motion picture show or any place of public entertainment or public assemblage which is attended by both white and colored persons, shall separate the white race and the colored race and shall set apart and designate...certain seats therein to be occupied by white persons and a portion thereof , or certain seats therein, to be occupied by colored persons.

"The conductors or managers on all such railroads shall have power, and are hereby required, to assign to each white or colored passenger his or her respective car, coach or compartment. If the passenger fails to disclose his race, the conductor and managers, acting in good faith, shall be the sole judges of his race.--Virginia

"No persons, firms, or corporations, who or which furnish meals to passengers at station restaurants or station eating houses, in times limited by common carriers of said passengers, shall furnish said meals to white and colored passengers in the same room, or at the same table, or at the same counter."

"It shall be unlawful for any parent, relative, or other white person in this State, having the control or custody of any white child, by right of guardianship, natural or acquired, or otherwise, to dispose of, give or surrender such white child permanently into the custody, control, maintenance, or support, of a negro."--South Carloina

This was America, the "land of the free" .. a mere 42 years ago.

It should not be a noose forever around the south's neck, anymore than the racism of other regions should continue to damn them.

I wouldn't really bring up nooses in this context, considering one of the flash points of the Jena 6 controversy is that fact that three white kids were expelled, then had that knocked down to a three-day suspension (just an innocent prank), after hanging three nooses on a tree on the school grounds that was apparently reserved for whites only after a black kid that was new in town asked permission from the principal to sit under it and did so.

But, that's just me.

Bac continues to beat a dead horse....for your info most if not all in here were not alive during the 'Civil War',or prohibition or whatever....and the fact remains we are not guilty of all that you profess...I have nor do I share 'absolutely' no guilt...end of story!

It should not be a noose forever around the south's neck, anymore than the racism of other regions should continue to damn them.

The south does not make it easy for people to get past their violent and ungodly racist history.

Germany had the intelligence to get beyond it's own horrors by eliminating and outlawing any and all vestiges of hateful symbolism. You cannot fly the swaztiga in Germany today.

The protesters to Jena were met with confederate flags and its reported that confederate flags and nooses are being flown and hung all over the area today.

This madness will not stop until serious people stop making excuses for evil.

Give it a rest already...you were not alive during the 'Civil War' or for the most part any other civil action...quit with the racism already! Are you related to 'Jesse' or the other idiot(Al) who stirs the pot continually?

I have a feeling, Black, that within my generation me or someone like me will be able to get that damn flag removed from our state flag, and finally make it a righteous flag.

People say "It's part our history!", and I'm like, goddamit, yeah, and I wish it weren't. No reason to praise it.

Did you hear me ask you to join hands and sing "cumbaya" asshole?

Who gives a fuck what a drunk ass pervert has no guilt of?

Grown folks are talking.

I think blackascoal is Al Sharpton's online alias which he uses to gauge how ridiculous his ideas are by people's reactions.

That's why I used it.

I did not know about the nooses in the Jena incident before posting my comments concerning making this a southern thing. I may have responded differently. Does not change the point that racism is not at all uniquely southern and I am sick of the generalization that the south is all racist.

It's a sick story and the principal should be sued for not doing something to stop this. I don't and never did agree with the trying them as adults, nonsense.

Our best governer was Ray Maybus. I can't BELIEVE he was beaten by that racist bastard Fordice, but 10 years later polls showed that most Mississippians had regretted their decision. Then another racist Republican, Barbour, won, on a platform to "support the flag". Does this last forever?

You are not a 'Grown Folk'

Just a biggot on the other side of the spectrum..have another ale in the 32 oz range!:pke:

Seriously though bac, what should be done?

What single action would do the most to create racial equality?

Honest conversation would go a long way my brother.

Whites demanding fairness in the criminal justice system would be cause to create a new holiday. America has become a prison nation .. the biggest in all of modern human history. Blacks pay severely for that injustice.

That single action alone would restrore confidence to many who have simply given up on America.

The ONLY political party that takes these issues seriously is the Green Party.

Fair enough. I agree that not all the south is racist and that not all southern are racist. It does seem, though, that the most egregious incidents occur in the south.

For Christ's sake there was a tree on school grounds in Jena that was reserved for whites only. A new kid in town that was black felt it necessary to ask permission to sit under it. I've never heard of anything approaching that in any part of the country other than the south.

I think that's why the stain is still on the south.

It's in the culture man. U of A is going through a zoning dispute right now where the white zoning board chose to literally encircle a black neighborhood without annexing it. I would love to see that on a map.

Green Party urges dropping all Jena Six charges, probe racism in justice system

Greens urge Louisiana to drop all charges against the Jena Six, call for a national discussion of racial bias in criminal justice systems throughout the US

WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party leaders called on the State of Louisiana to drop all charges in the Jena Six prosecution, and urged a national discussion on the US justice system's unequal treatment of African Americans and other people of color.

Greens will be among the thousands rallying in front of the Jena, Louisiana, courthouse on Thursday, September 20, as the next Jena Six trial begins. Many Greens and the DC Statehood Green Party have contributed to the Jena Six defense fund. (For background on the Jena Six, see the article links below.)

The Green Party of Louisiana <http://www.lagreens.org>, at its September 8 statewide convention, passed a resolution by consensus declaring, "We, as the Green Party of Louisiana call for the justice and freedom of the Jena 6, the Angola 3, Gary Tyler, and all other political prisoners."

"Two things are obvious about the Jena Six prosecution -- first, that the extreme charges would never have been brought against the students if they had been white, and second, that if not for the national attention the case has drawn, the students would have already quietly been thrown in jail," said Malik Rahim, former Green city council candidate in New Orleans.

"We urge the Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco to drop all of the charges against Jena Six defendants, but that's not enough. The case has focused attention on how the legal system treats black and brown people, and how poor Americans and people of color suffer more severe charges and harsher sentencing, inadequate legal representation, and plea bargain deals forced on the innocent. Let this be an occasion for a national debate on how to restore justice to our criminal justice system," added Mr. Malik, who is also co-founder and organizer of the Common Ground Collective <http://www.commongroundrelief.org>, which provides relief for victims of hurricane disasters in the Gulf Coast region and support in rebuilding affected communities in the New Orleans area.

Greens have called for an end to the war on drugs and abolition of the death penalty, both of which have been applied disproportionately against people of color. Green leaders also support the repeal of zero tolerance and mandatory sentencing statutes, which enlarge the power of prosecutors and erode judicial discretion. (See "Green Party says racially biased US justice system needs drastic overhaul," Green Party press release, July 25, 2007 <http://www.gp.org/press/pr_2007_07_25.shtml>. )

"In many towns and states across the US, lynch mobs and Jim Crow laws have merely been replaced with police, prosecutors, and judges who make a special effort to target African Americans. The result has been gross racial disparities in incarceration, with black people imprisoned at over five times the rate of whites and Latinos at nearly twice the white rate. Injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere," said Cliff Thornton, co-chair of the Green Party of Connecticut and co-founder of Efficacy, Inc. <http://www.efficacy-online.org>, which promotes major reforms in drug policy.

Greens cite the fact that the US also has the world's highest incarceration rate, with 5% of the world's population and 25% of all the world's prisoners, as evidence that the justice system needs drastic reform. Louisiana has the highest incarceration in the US. The Green Party -- unlike the Democratic and Republican parties -- has strongly opposed the expansion of the private prison industry, warning that the demand for corporate profits creates a national economic incentive to fill cells.

"An appeals court has overturned the conviction of Mychal Bell, one of the Jena Six, because he should not have been charged as an adult. This is a clue that Jena prosecutors were out for blood when they targeted black students, while going easy on white students who've gotten into fights. Jena will deservedly be the focus of greater national anger if the charges are allowed to stand; but we need to investigate and fix the criminal justice system throughout the US, wherever racial and economic bias is evident," said Alfred Molison, Green candidate for City Council in Houston, Texas <http://www.votealfred.com>, Co-Chair of the Green Party Black Caucus <http://gpblackcaucus.blogspot.com>, and keynote speaker at Louisiana Green Party's state convention.
