Jews, we need to speak out against DeSantis’ efforts to erase Black history

Yet this latest bill strikes at the very core of Judaism’s commandment to learn from history. It’s not just about the Holocaust. Every year during Passover, we contemplate what it means to have been slaves and are literally commanded to experience the holiday as if we are in Egypt ourselves — and then learn from it how to treat others.

This isn’t just about sympathizing with another group. Within the Jewish community, we have members who are Black and multiracial. Teaching about African American history and culture involves teaching about the history of African American Jews, and for that reason alone, we should see it as a Jewish issue.

DeSantis’ strategy isn’t new. Throughout history, those bent on inflaming racial and ethnic tensions, or those who simply wanted to use an easy scapegoat, have tried to limit how we talk about the past.


“DeSantis is using an age-old trick used to persecute groups like members of the African and Jewish diasporas; he is striking aim at memory and practice of tradition and culture,” says Michael Twitty, a writer whose works examine his Black and Jewish identity and whose book Koshersoul recently won the National Jewish Book Award.

When I reached out to hear his reaction to the news, Twitty cited examples such as Christian leaders in Europe calling for the burning of Jewish texts and American white slaveholders forbidding enslaved people from sharing their culture. “It’s clear that his war with cultural and historical literacy is pointed and intentionally devastating,” he adds.

I think that it would indeed be entertaining to see the normally affable Shaquille O'Neal rip your limbs off one by one before removing your head.

The only drawback is that the pay-per-view buys would be limited since most people are blessed to not know who the fuck you are.

Yes that is an undeniable symbol of how Republicans would white wash history and we have countless others.

They want only one view of such things taught in classes and to control the narrative (as they also scream we are the party of FREE SPEECH, lol).

When Germany saw Hitler fall and the Nazi's mostly disappear they did not rush to push the symbols of Naziism as "Good and Patriotic' as the US South did with Confederate traitors to the country. They did not race to immortalize and honour top Nazi generals in the way the US South did with traitorous Confederate Generals. The US system taught a sanitized version of Columbus coming to America as the bearer of gifts and good fortune and being friend the indigenous instead of teaching he was a conqueror who deliberately triggered a genocide so he could take their lands.

So that answers, in part your question of 'how so', when it comes to the white european males control of, and sanitization of, the history THEY want told.

Well, it is a flag of treason against the USA, but it is not the flag you think it is. The Stars and Bars is the Confederate Flag. What you think of as the Confederate Flag is an elongated battle flag of the Confederacy which was rarely used even in its unmodified form. The real Confederacy almost always used state flags.

What is generally called the "Confederate Flag" is really the KKK Flag, and is used as a threat towards Blacks.

that can be your distorted view of history but no one else has to accept that distortion.

Pushing that only your distorted view of that history can be taught, is absolutely anti free speech, and in every way an attempt to control speech and narratives, like DeSantis is doing.
 
And what about the history of pieces of shit, like Nathan Bedford Forrest, Confederate General, who went on to help found the KKK and become its first Grand Wizard, during a time of lynchings and other hate crimes by that organization?

You have various Southern governments putting statues of guys like him in gov't buildings, post the civil war ending, like in the DMV, where anyone (including POC) getting any gov't service, such as a drivers license, will have to see him being celebrated. That is a certain push of a certain view of history.

And yet, when others push back and say, that is not our history, then those same people want gov't to step in and tell them what can and cannot be taught.
