Actually, the middle class already pay federal income taxes and would pay less under a consumption tax (see Damocles’ post).

The poor pay no federal income tax. This is not fair. Everyone must have skin in the game.

It won't be implemented because far too many of the bureaucracy rely on jobs that center around the collection, implementation, auditing, looking at your bank accounts, receipts, for taxation based on a 400,000 page monstrosity that we've created. There is nothing more permanent than a temporary government program.
 
The poor share in the benefits of living in America. Interstate highways, national defense etc.

They should pay their fair share.

So, shifting more of the tax burden to the poor - who are already falling way behind every day because their income can't keep up w/ the cost of living, while the top 1% prosper.

Wrong, the wealthy would pay more than the poor because they consume more.

Those who are not mentally or physically competent would pay nothing.

Wrong, Earl. The wealthy would pay more if we changed strictly to a CONSUMPTION TAX.

But, the poor would pay more than they do RIGHT NOW. Which you have acknowledged, btw - and said that they SHOULD pay their fair share.

It’s only fair.

Why should anyone get a free ride, except the mentally and physically impaired?
