They have no reason to even worry about how big the government gets or where the money that pay for their benefits is coming from. They ain't paying for it, so they don't care.
If they have to pay the same percentage as everyone else does for the things they buy, they will suddenly "get it", because for the first time in our modern history, they will have a vested interest in holding politicians to account if the government gets too big and spends too much.

When we were kids, we didn't care what things cost because we weren't the ones paying. We took things for granted.
But (some of us) grew up.
Some of us went to work and earned enough to pay federal income tax.
Some of us started a business.
Once you see how much the government is taking out of your paycheck, it changes your perspective. People who aren't making that sacrifice never grow up.
That's what makes fiscal conservatives out of people.
You have to have skin in the game to understand.
