New Testament scholarship

you're dumb as shit

Why so antagonistic just before the holidays?

I would LOVE to talk to someone who knows something about art. It's something I'm kind of passionate about. But I see I can get no joy here. Again, any time you would like to talk about art I'm always happy to oblige.

These are five widely accepted historical facts among scholars about Jesus.
Any interpretation of the key events of the New Testament has to be able explain these facts. I have about four hypotheses myself that might explain the facts.

1) The death of Jesus of Nazareth by Roman crucifixion around AD 30.

2) His internment in a tomb by a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin.

3) The discovery by a group of his female followers three days after the crucifixion that his tomb was empty.

4) Thereafter various individuals and groups of people experienced appearances of Jesus after his crucifixion and entombment.

5) The disciples came to believe that God had raised Jesus from the dead.
6) At the first Pentecost ,the Holy Spirit was sent to the Apostles!
Without this event Christianity would have died out in decades at most!

Going to art galleries does not make you an expert on art history. My god!

I have also read extensively. But I'm curious why you downplay the actual experience of art.

I get the sense that art is not your thing per se. I'm not an artist...it is just a passion for me. Which is why I know as much as I do. I'm not some art historian or anything, but I've been around.

If you ever get the "art itch" and take an interest there's a LOT to explore out there.

I'm growing kind of fond of "modern art" as well. Not in the same way I love other forms of art, but because they often present some really interesting experiences. I would recommend Palais Du Tokyo in Paris if you are up for some really edgy stuff. Kaisma in Helsinki is also quite nice.

I still love the old stuff, though. Particularly fond of the Flemish artists.

Art really is a great experience. And it can be appreciated even without understanding the allegory or metaphor the artist intended, but with it it can be really rich. Just look at Gerard David's "Judgement of Cambyses". It's LOADED with allegory. It was painted specifically to hang in the administrative offices of Bruges because it was an allegory about honesty in politics. Even the little details in the background, like where Cambyses son is sitting on a dias covered in his father's skin as an homage to serving the role over personal interests (or so I assume).

Sure it's a stunning and TERRIFYING work of art, but with the context it becomes understandable.

Yet the Gospels include Joseph in the genealogies to establish Jesus' link with the Davidic line do they not? Why do they include that bit?
1 he was of the davidic line through both Mary and Joseph, his step father.
2 the gospel directed at the Jews mentions Joseph, the one directed at the Greek speakers focused on Mary

It is an interesting topic to ask why Christianity succeeded when probably countless other apocalyptic sects from that time and place died out quietly and quickly.

I honestly think it was largely due to folks like Paul who was clearly a very active administrator and dedicated to the cause of not only setting up churches across the region but also bringing it more into the Roman empire.

Once it was established in the Roman Empire proper it stood a much better chance (despite some efforts to demonize them and wipe them out). And finally when Constantine has his "vision" (or figured out the proper political play) and made Christianity the de facto religion of the empire it was a fait accompli.

I am an artist.

Seriously? Wow.

So, as an artist, why do you think that history of art in the West is NOT deeeeeeeply influenced by Christianity? (I'm not talking about TODAY's art, but the history of art in the West, especially since the fall of the Roman Empire, was largely funded and supported and in service to the church.)

You're a dumb fuck.

I'm more than happy to let this bit of rage pass. I'm truly interested in what an artist has to say especially if it countervenes pretty much everything I've read over the last 50 or so years.

What do you think art history is?

The history of art. I don't see anything particularly mysterious about that.

I can't help but note that you have not yet provided any evidence against my claim other than to repeat the assertion that it is wrong.

Because you think art history is mostly about Christianity. That is silly and shows you know nothing.

Why don't you give me the years and geographical location of the art you consider to be Christian.

No, I've already corrected you on this point. I do NOT think art history is MOSTLY ABOUT CHRISTIANITY. I never said that and I have REPEATEDLY AND TO YOU SAID THE EXACT OPPOSITE.

Please, if you wish to make a point about my posts, please be respectful enough to not misrepresent what I have REPEATEDLY said to you:

The history of art IN THE WEST was GREATLY INFLUENCED BY CHRISTIANITY. The arts up through the Medieval period were OFTEN sponsored by, and done in service TO the Church. It just was.

I never said ALL ART was this, nor do I think that it was. I merely pointed out the outsized influence Christianity has had on art in the west in its history.

That is silly and shows you know nothing.

If you make up a misrepresentation of a point and then argue against that you will surely win. But just not against MY point.

I hope I have explained it sufficiently to you.

I know now that you will NEVER provide any actual information about art or art history. I no longer expect it from you. You have danced around the topic too hard at this point for me to believe you have anything of merit to discuss on this topic.

Apologies. I would LOVE to talk to an actual artist. I can see that is not to be today or here.
