I was never a big Facebook or other social media fan but have been on forums of one sort or another for about 25 years.
I was on BBSs back in the late 80s. Those were fun because we'd all have a party at the operator's apartment pool, drink beer and swap software.
Let's think about that..25 years ago it was 1997, and while there were a few Bulletin Boards, you had to have a TCP connection to get to them and that area of the internet was mighty small.
1997 was the year of the "Auto-Anti '97" anti-punter that didn't work worth a shit.
It was also the year of Havok Tools, Jehovah Scroller, and Crusade.
50% of internet traffic was on AOL in 1997 Dutchy. There were no Bulletin Boards or forums on AOL in 1997, Dutchy. Hmm..
Who was your ISP in 1997, Butch Uncle? How did you connect to the internet in 1997, dude?
1997 was the glory days of AOL; It was before the fags took it over, you could punt or TOS anyone you wanted to if you had a mind to.
With great power also comes great responsibility, though. I've seen a lot of things come and go on the internet.
Phreaking, for instance. I knew a lot of that stuff from my school days and just phones, but the internet propelled that to new heights!
I remember who was the king of that, It was this dude called "Wizard of Woz". He gave me a phreaking program, it was clean, and that stuff worked until around '98.
Ofc he hung in the room with Manson; And really everyone in that room were our direct rivals. We were the PC people, and they were the Mac people.
Can't say they were lame; I went in there talking shit to Manson and got reset fucking mid-shit talk. Manson had some power. Still didn't like him, but I had to respect his skills.
Yeah, the <>< I was doing that on got fried. In 1997 phreaking was going away, but punting and TOSing were still happening and nuking.
Nuking was kicking people off the internet with an instant "Integer divide by zero" error.
I've had it happen to me, and I've done it to people, but cannot find a screenshot of it, or what it looked like anywhere.
By "kicking people off the internet" I mean they had to reboot their computer and sign in again. Nothing life-threatening, but a lot of fun!
Oh! The horror! Wahhhh! I got kicked off the internet and had to restart my computer to get back on!
Today's snowflakes would freak the fuck out about things like that happening.
I bet no one can find a Windows 95 "Integer divide by 0" blue/aqua screen of death screenshot or picture.
It's something that happened a lot, yet there is no documentation of. It was very simple and profound and was wholly an internet occurence (almost)
Yet there's no documentation of it that I can find.
