Pelosi says capitalism has not served the U.S. economy

LONDON — For some, the economic philosophy of capitalism is synonymous with America.

But the concept is in urgent need of being improved and has not served the U.S. economy as well as it could have, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told an audience in London on Friday.

“In America, capitalism is our system, it is our economic system, but it has not served our economy as well as it should,” she told guests attending an event at the international affairs think tank Chatham House. “So what we want to do is not depart from that, but to improve it and to make sure that it serves us.”

It's a mixed bag. She isn't all wrong or all right. The wealth disparity and poverty numbers are a public disgrace, as is the national debt.

Growth, output and total wealth and inflation levels over time are terrific. Our population is mostly literate.
There is an abundance of food. There is free public education. So those baseline things are still there.

We have an economy that caters to the rich. You have to come to the USA to get the very best of everything,
but you can't have any of it unless you are rich. Shanty streets in cities with thousands living in deplorable poverty and disease and dirt.

No, you hate America.

Did you serve?

I respect America more than someone who falls for a know nothing blowhard like Trump, a guy who would sell out my country in a heartbeat for a price. Yes, I served. I enlisted straight out of high school. I've also served in the political sphere, in journalism and in law, and I've studied what America is and has been about.

So, you have TDS , like all the other far left loons.

President Trump did not cause the deaths of 13 of our military, leave Americans and Afghans stranded in Afghanistan...hostages and caused Afghanistan to become a terrorist nation-state.

He also defended our sovereignty at the border, lowered taxes and assisted in the lightening speed development of the COVID 19 vaccination and its distribution, lowered taxes, facilitated 4 peace agreements in the ME.

I seriously doubt that you served, the far left leaves that to American patriots.

I served three years. My serial number is branded in my brain. But I can see you haven't "served" if you think the military is made up of "American patriots" rather than guys who joined for one or more of a host of reasons, most having little to do with patriotic fervor. You're the guy, Earl, with TDS. To me, Trump is a sorry excuse for a grown man. He strikes me as unhappy, vengeful, selfish, humorless, unread and uninterested in most things that give satisfaction in living. I would feel sorry for him if he would be good enough to stay out of public life.

The American economy was ROARING in the 1950s and 1960s with 90% tax rate on corporations
Deregulation and tax cuts for the rich have NEVER IS OUR HISTORY produced the results the republicans claim
Fuck off you lie whore

That's because the US was the only major nation that wasn't in ruins from WW 2. Once Japan and Europe began to recover fully, the US economic position went into decline.
Maybe you should look more closely at what killed off the US steel and auto industry across what's now the "Rust Belt" sometime. Regulation, taxes, and heavy handed unions destroyed them.

Now, can we get back to the thread?
Who cares? That isn't the issue. The issue at hand is What killed it off?

The length of this economic period is right on subject

When did the war end?
1945

When did this economic boom end?
About 1952 (7 years)

After 1952, economic growth in the US slowed dramatically. While it continued to gain ground into the late 60's it did so at a much slower pace. Then, under Nixon a massive growth in regulations occurred, particularly with the introduction of OSHA and the EPA. That was the beginning of the end for the Detroit auto industry and steel production in the US.

Capitalism helps concentrate wealth, which is useful to fund huge projects. But capitalism is not a system of government. A lot of people do not understand the difference.
